A fresh lineage of Atreides and Harkonnen families is presented in HBO’s prequel show “Dune: Prophecy,” which unfolds a millennium prior to the scenarios depicted in Denis Villeneuve’s dual “Dune” films.
In “Dune: Prophecy,” since the narrative unfolds centuries ago, you won’t find Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen or Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan. Instead, their ancestral counterparts are prominently featured in this prequel series. The show delves into the origins of the enigmatic Bene Gesserit, a powerful sect of women who manipulate politics behind the scenes, with Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica and Lea Seydoux’s Lady Margot being part of their ranks in future adaptations. “Dune: Prophecy” also explores the age-old rivalry between the Atreides and Harkonnen families as well as the historic conflict between humans and intelligent machines, a war that shapes the universe’s destiny.
Emily Watson and Olivia Williams play Valya and Tula Harkonnen, two powerful Bene Gesserit sisters with a grand ambition: they aim to seize control of the universe. They strategize to sway Mark Strong’s Emperor Javicco Corrino (a forerunner of Christopher Walken’s Emperor Shaddam IV) and rejuvenate House Harkonnen. Their scheme encompasses expanding the Bene Gesserit’s power across the cosmos, brainwashing the Emperor’s daughter, Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina), and “Dune” aficionados will encounter other members of Houses Harkonnen and Corrino. To add more intrigue, a member from the Atreides royal lineage is introduced, who is an ancestor to Timothée Chalamet’s character, Paul Atreides.
Unlike the movies, “Dune: Prophecy” is set far from the sandy world of Arrakis and its colossal sandworms; however, it features some characters whose roots can be traced back to the arid expanse of the desert.

Valya serves as the present head of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood and guides its members. Accompanying her is her sister Tula, both hailing from the fallen House Harkonnen, with aspirations to reinstate its once-respected position. In her role as leader of the Bene Gesserit, Valya manages their training and strategically positions these powerful witches among various royal families across the cosmos, manipulating political events discreetly.
Olivia Williams as Tula Harkonnen
Valya’s sibling, Tula, instructs the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood on techniques related to influence, honesty, and fighting.
Mark Strong as Emperor Javicco Corrino
Similar to how Christopher Walken portrays Emperor Shaddam IV in “Dune: Part 2”, Emperor Javicco governs the Imperium, encompassing the entire galactic empire. He hails from a dynasty of war-time leaders and faces the challenge of maintaining order during an uncertain era of peace across the cosmos.
Jodhi May as Empress Natalya
Through her wedding to Emperor Javicco, Natalya brought together countless galaxies in the cosmos, ushering in an era of tranquility. Her child, Ynez, is poised to enter the Bene Gesserit order and grow into a potent influence within the imperial dynasty.
Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez
Ynez is the sole daughter of the Emperor and Empress, much like Princess Irulan in “Dune: Part 2,” played by Florence Pugh in future events. She’s poised to join the Bene Gesserit, but finds herself ensnared in a complex predicament with her combat mentor, Keiran Atreides.

In the storyline of a popular HBO series-like drama, there’s a character named Constantine who is the illegitimate son of Emperor Javicco. He grapples with the desire for his father’s approval and pursuing his own aspirations, much like Jon Snow from “Game of Thrones.
Chris Mason as Keiran Atreides
On the show, Kieran represents the forefather of Timothee Chalamet’s character Paul Atreides, maintaining the powerful lineage of House Atreides. Evgeny is the uncle of Valya and Tula, and was once a strong member of the exiled House Harkonnen. Since his house has lost its status in the universe, he appears rather run-down, which explains why the Harkonnens portrayed in the “Dune” films eventually become bald and pale.
Edward Davis as Harrow Harkonnen
