The third installment of Dune, titled Dune: Part Three, is currently being worked on, and it has a lot to live up to. The initial two films in Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy have garnered immense affection within the science fiction enthusiast community. Dune: Part Two, in particular, excelled, earning $714.6 million globally and receiving multiple Academy Award nominations. With this positive trajectory, the third movie stands poised to surpass these achievements. Although an official release date hasn’t been announced yet, Warner Bros. has scheduled a Denis Villeneuve film for December 18, 2026, which is presumed to be earmarked for Dune 3’s premiere.
Although there’s much excitement surrounding it, creating the third Dune movie presents substantial obstacles. For instance, the book upon which it’s presumably based, Dune: Messiah, is often seen as a less compelling installment in the series. One of its numerous criticisms is that it fails to include Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), a character who has garnered positive responses in Denis Villeneuve’s adaptations thus far. Villeneuve and his team will need to find ways to handle this and other issues, as well as decide what modifications to make from the book. However, there’s one character they should definitely consider incorporating.
Dune 3 Should Introduce Paul Atreides’ Son, Leto Atreides II
He Is Paul’s Second Born Son
In the upcoming movie “Dune: Part Three,” there’s a chance for the story to introduce Leto Arteides II, who shares the same name as Paul Atreides’ late father (portrayed by Oscar Isaac in “Dune”). Leto II is one of Paul’s offspring. He has a twin sister named Ghanima. Biologically speaking, these characters are the children of Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya), who is part of the Fremen tribe and is his true love. Although Paul is officially married to Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), as hinted at in the ending of “Dune: Part Two,” Chani is Leto II’s actual mother, although she sadly passes away during childbirth.
In the subsequent chapter of Paul’s narrative, it might be intriguing for Dune: Part Three to introduce Leto II. As power begins to corrupt the protagonist, shaping his decisions, it would also be engaging to depict how his influence continues through his offspring, offering insight into his legacy. Furthermore, this could serve as a tribute to the initial film, given that Leto II shares his name with his deceased grandfather. Notably, Leto II is Paul’s second-born son, as the first Leto was tragically killed during infancy.
Leto Atreides II Is Key To The Dune Franchise’s Future After Messiah
He Becomes The Lead
In the world of ‘Dune’, Leto Atreides II significantly contributes to Paul’s lasting impact and plays a pivotal role in the series itself. Following the events of ‘Dune: Messiah’, Leto II ascends to become the central character, appearing in two subsequent novels by Frank Herbert – ‘Children of Dune’ and its immediate successor. He also features in the 1981 novel ‘God Emperor of Dune’, albeit in a transformed physical state that remains intriguing and captivating. Essentially, Leto II assumes the lead role within the ‘Dune’ franchise.
Previously, some viewers have caught glimpses of Leto II in various productions. Specifically, a 2003 miniseries named “Children of Dune” centered around Leto II and his sister, Ghanima, delving into the intricate politics on Arrakis. Notably, James McAvoy portrayed the character back then. With Villeneuve’s vision to reinvigorate and add his unique touch to the “Dune” franchise, a fresh take on Leto II might prove intriguing.
Dune 3 Can Set Up The Franchise For Success If Audiences Love Leto II
This Could Spur A Potential Fourth Movie
If the third Dune film is to follow the storyline from Dune: Messiah, there’s a significant challenge when it comes to portraying Leto II on screen because he’s only a baby in that book. In fact, his birth happens towards the end of the novel, which means his role is quite limited. However, introducing Leto II in Dune: Part Three could set up future movies effectively. For Villeneuve and his team, it would require clever storytelling to engage viewers with this infant character. If they manage to pull it off successfully, it could pave the way for a fourth movie, although without the original director.
