In a chilling twist, the thriller “Drop,” featuring Meghann Fahy from “The White Lotus,” is not just a work of fiction. It draws inspiration from a true, unresolved enigma that surrounds its production team.
In the direction of Christopher Landon, known for Happy Death Day, comes the suspenseful film titled Drop. The story revolves around Violet (played by Fahy), a widowed mom who re-enters the dating scene following an encounter with Henry (Brandon Sklenar) on Tinder.
Yet, the ideal date for them transforms into a horrifying reality as she starts getting ominous AirDrop messages anonymously on her phone. These messages grow more menacing, culminating in a chilling ultimatum that ends in tragedy.
Or:
But instead of the perfect date they had envisioned, it became a living nightmare when she started receiving mysterious and escalating AirDop messages on her phone, eventually leading to a fatal ultimatum.
Just before the film’s debut, TopMob had a chat with Landon, during which he shared some intriguing insights about the unusual influences that shaped the technological aspect of the plot.
Drop was based on a creepy true story
In the filmmaker’s words, it was revealed that Brad and Cameron Fuller, the producers of Drop, happened to be on a holiday when they unexpectedly began receiving mysterious texts on their mobile devices.
Landon mentioned that our team members were out for vacation, dining at a restaurant, when they began receiving AirDrop messages mysteriously from an unknown source within the establishment.
For the entire night, they were working tirelessly to unravel that enigma, but their efforts were in vain as they couldn’t find a solution.
Even though they never found out who was sending the messages, it gave them an idea.
After finishing their dinner, they left with a seed of a film concept in mind. They subsequently contacted Chris [Roach] and Jill [Jacobs], who were responsible for developing the movie’s suspenseful plotline.
“But yes, it’s based on real events.”
Absolutely, the events unfolding in Drop are far from ordinary, encompassing intricate murder schemes and mysterious threats that intertwine with Violet’s troubled history.
Christopher Landon reveals Drop’s biggest challenge
Much of the film unfolds within the restaurant that serves as the venue for Violet and Henry’s initial date, a setting Landon came to admire over time.
He mentioned that the hardest part was finding ways to create tension and excitement in a movie set at one location, primarily focusing on characters gathered around dining tables,” he shared with us.
In my opinion, the apprehension could be summarized as, “What if it turns out dull?” This aspect presented a significant hurdle, yet it was simultaneously the thrilling part of filmmaking since everyone was up for the task.
As a passionate craftsperson, I’ve lovingly constructed and customized this versatile stage, offering an expansive range of possibilities. This allows me to experiment with numerous ideas and capture some truly distinctive and artistic shots.
Additionally, we had complete control over the lighting, which initially filled me with apprehension. However, it unexpectedly turned out to be the aspect I admired the most, transforming my greatest fear into my favorite feature.
The film “Drop” will hit theaters starting this coming Friday, April 11th, 2025. In the meantime, explore the latest movies available for streaming this month, discover some top-notch thrillers on Netflix, and take a look at our list of the most terrifying horrors ever made.
