At GDC 2025, LightSpeed Studios unveiled that Hideaki Itsuno, director of both Devil May Cry 5 and Dragon’s Dogma 2, is leading the development of a new action title within their studio. This project is part of LightSpeed’s broader strategy, known as the “Original IP Initiative,” aimed at creating new franchise series. In this endeavor, Itsuno will collaborate with LightSpeed Japan Studio to produce a top-tier AAA action game.
So far, no specifics about the upcoming game – neither its name nor any other details – have been disclosed. However, Itsuno has hinted at an innovative game that will surprise players with elements they’ve never encountered in games before. The game is set to showcase fresh experiences leveraging advanced technology.
Itsuno stated that we’re constructing an innovative space where multiple cultural viewpoints meet advanced technology. Our primary goal is to create game mechanics that provide players with unprecedented adventures – the sort of fresh ideas that will leave players exclaiming, ‘I’ve never encountered something like this in a game!’
In addition to this news update, it was mentioned that Steve Martin, Vice President at LightSpeed Studios, highlighted the company’s robustness due to its diverse team of experienced developers. To provide some context, these developers have a history of working on popular games from studios like Rockstar, Naughty Dog, Obsidian, and Sony Santa Monica.
Martin asserted in his statement that every developer yearns deeply for the opportunity to create unique games. He finds the unbridled creativity involved in developing a new universe, constructing captivating stories and characters, and the surge of ideas and inspiration this process generates, to be the aspiration of any creative mind. That’s why he believes LightSpeed Studios is an ideal destination for such professionals.
Last January, I was thrilled to learn that Hideaki Itsuno, known for his incredible work in the gaming world, had joined LightSpeed Studios. At that time, he hinted that work on an exciting new project was already underway, and we were all eagerly awaiting official news about it. It’s been about half a year since I bid farewell to Capcom back in August 2024, but now, I can’t wait to see what amazing adventures this collaboration with LightSpeed Studios will bring!
During his extensive career at Capcom, Itsuki’s final significant project was the development of Dragon’s Dogma 2. Additionally, he contributed to other notable installments within the franchise, such as Devil May Cry 3, 4, and 5. Over three decades with Capcom, Itsuki has been involved in creating numerous games, including Star Gladiator and Rival Schools: United by Fate.
Besides their collaboration with Itsuno, LightSpeed Studios has been simultaneously developing a narrative-driven open-world game called “Last Sentinel”. This game is set in a future version of Tokyo, where the project’s leadership falls under Martin, who boasts experience on renowned open-world series such as Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption.
The game titled “Last Sentinel” is being crafted utilizing Unreal Engine 5, and it positions players within Hiromi Shoda’s perspective. At this point, not a lot has been disclosed about the game, as its announcement trailer mainly focuses on setting rather than gameplay. Nevertheless, what we do know is that the main character will serve as a peacekeeper. The specifics of how her role as a peacemaker might clash with the game’s core narrative remain to be seen.
