As a seasoned gamer who has traversed countless virtual worlds, I must say that the images of Dragon Quest III – HD 2D Remake have left me utterly spellbound! The intricate detail and captivating art style transport us back to the golden age of RPGs, yet with a modern polish.
As the launch date for the enhanced version of “Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake” approaches (November 14), we’ve had another chance to explore this upcoming role-playing game. This latest sneak peek highlights one completely revamped feature in the remake, and a place that fans who have played earlier versions of Dragon Quest III will recognize.
In a recent announcement, Square Enix unveiled the Monster Tamer profession coming soon in the latest edition of Dragon Quest III. Besides mastering abilities learned from monsters to enhance their repertoire, these characters can also aid players by rescuing monsters, offering an exciting new gameplay dynamic.
In Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, it appears a novel feature has been introduced where players might be able to interact with monsters by petting them, potentially even recruiting them into your party. However, the specifics of who can perform this action and under what circumstances are yet to be clarified; it remains unknown if only those with the Monster Wrangler profession can do so or if you simply come across friendly monsters during exploration that may join your team.
Regardless of your choice, incorporating monster recruitment into this remake opens up the new and improved Monster Arena. Monsters that you’ve “saved”, according to the game, can engage in battles against other teams of monsters, with each team comprising up to three creatures. This setup bears a strong resemblance to the Dragon Quest Monsters spin-off series, as players don’t have direct control over their squad of monsters.
As a player, I find it more convenient when the three monstrous entities are not directly controlled by me but instead receive commands through a Tactics menu. This approach allows them to act autonomously, similar to how my party members behave when I’m not manually controlling their turns. I can instruct these creatures to conserve their energy, give it their all, or find a balance; for the healers among them, I can even direct them to prioritize healing actions.
In this demo version, Square Enix equipped me with an extraordinary lineup, including Slime, Healslime, and Spiked Hare. Although I didn’t have direct control over their actions, managing resources was still crucial since the battles in Monster Arena were a series of successive fights. If my monster team depleted their MP too quickly at the start, later battles could become more challenging.
I chose to explore further into the detailed status screens of each monster, and found that they all had their own unique levels and several unknown abilities. This leads me to believe there might be a complex system or intricate layer waiting for those who wish to delve deeper in this updated Monster Arena of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. In earlier versions of DQ3, the Monster Arena functioned more simply, where players could wager gold on monster battles.
As a gamer, scoring victories using my carefully crafted, personalized squad of monsters brings not just gold, but also valuable loot like items and gear as well!
Following my visit to the Monster Arena, I felt motivated to climb Skyfell Tower – a place that Dragon Quest III enthusiasts will recall. What surprised me was how different this location appeared in this updated version. The 3D graphics seamlessly complemented my 2D pixel team of characters, including the Hero, Mage, Priest, and Monster Wrangler as they roamed about.
It’s evident that much attention to detail has been given to the environmental lighting for the revamped Skyfell Tower in this edition of Dragon Quest III. The light now seems to subtly seep into the crumbling stone structure. Unlike previous versions of Dragon Quest III, where Skyfell Tower had a more square-like layout, this HD-2D Remake has made its floors more rounded and spacious.
On each floor, numerous rooms inviting exploration were found, filled with environmental elements contributing to their forsaken ambiance. Scattered books sat alongside sparse bookshelves. Furniture such as tables and chairs remained, decaying gradually, giving the impression that everything had been halted by a time-stopping force.
In simpler terms, the Monster Wrangler job appears versatile and beneficial based on a player’s dedication to mastering its various skills. During the demo, my Monster Wrangler proved quite useful with a mix of single-target and area-of-effect attacks, as well as abilities for buffing, debuffing, and party support. It seems this role can cover any remaining needs in a player’s party setup, potentially excelling if it learns unique monster abilities that stand out from other classes.
1. It’s true, scaling Skyfell Tower inevitably leads you to come across Robbin’ Ood and his band of thieves. They set off a floor trap when first caught stealing from the treasure room, which has been beautifully redesigned in the remake, by the way. The boss battle was quite challenging because Robbin’ Ood dealt heavy blows and I lacked numerous area-of-effect moves that could effectively hit all opponents consistently.
Despite lacking some resources, I managed to devise and execute an effective plan. Enhancing my speed, weakening the enemy’s attack strength, and gradually whittling down their forces, I eventually found myself at an upper hand during the fight. My adventure with Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake abruptly concluded after the boss battle, but the brief taste of it has me eagerly anticipating revisiting one of my favorite Dragon Quest installments in a fresh format this November.
