Okay, so I was playing Dragon Quest II in the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake and I was totally stuck trying to find the Magic Key! I kept running into all these blue chests and doors and started to worry I’d missed something important. But don’t worry, you don’t actually miss it! The key is now given to you by the mermaids, which is a new addition in this HD-2D remake. It’s a relief to know I wasn’t going crazy!
A woman in the northwest house in Rimuldar will tell you she created a Magic Key but dropped it in the water while traveling to Tantegel. While it might be tempting to search for it by boat, it’s a waste of time – you won’t find anything there.
Getting the ‘Golden Key’ in older versions of Dragon Quest II used to involve talking to people in the town of Zahan. While you can still talk to those same characters in the new HD-2D Remake, they no longer give you the key. The ‘Golden Key’ isn’t available in this updated version of the game.
Simply put, the Magic Key is obtained by continuing the story. It’s impossible to miss – you’ll get it as you play.

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake: Magic Key Location
The HD-2D Remake now includes a new scenario where you obtain the Magic Key from the Mermaids. It turns out the key that the Rimuldarian woman dropped into the water was found and taken by them.
Just like the Golden Key quest in older Dragon Quest II games, starting the Mermaid quest in this remake works in a similar way. After you get your boat, sail to Shipwright Shrine and then head to the nearby town of Zahan. If you follow the events in Zahan, you’ll eventually encounter the first mermaids at Gaggle Rock.
Once you’ve collected a few sigils, the fairies at Shrine of Rain will send you back to Gaggle Rock. The mermaids will then give you the Faerie Trumpet, which will allow you to enter the Faerie Palace and reach Dreamer’s Lake. You’ll need to travel through challenging areas like the Faerie Palace and Mermaid Sanctuary, but after rescuing both the fairies’ and mermaids’ homes, you’ll finally receive the Magic Key as a reward.
So, the Mermaids are rewarding you for helping them get their home back with a key… that they found washed up from the surface? That doesn’t seem very thoughtful, honestly!
