According to recent news, gaming company Square Enix is planning a modernized version of Dragon Quest VII. This role-playing game initially debuted on PlayStation consoles in Japan in 2000 and the United States in 2001. The anticipated remake may be released as early as 2026.
Based on MP1st reports, the Dragon Quest VII project is categorized as a “remake” rather than an “HD remake,” similar to the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake that was released last year. This implies that the RPG could undergo more changes than just a facelift, potentially including gameplay adjustments. Prior to this, Square Enix plans to release the Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake on October 30.
Masaaki Hayasaka, producer of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, expressed earlier this year his desire to work on Final Fantasy VI next. However, he clarified that this is simply his personal preference and pointed out that Final Fantasy VI played a significant role in inspiring Octopath Traveler, the first HD-2D game.
On previous occasions, Square Enix has also updated Dragon Quest VII. In the mid-2010s, they launched Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past on Nintendo 3DS. The enhanced role-playing game featured a fresh graphical makeover and displayed enemies on the map for players to see.
It appears that Square Enix is working on remaking another significant RPG franchise’s seventh installment as well. The storyline for Part 3 of the Final Fantasy VII Remake was wrapped up at the start of 2025. In May, the company announced that the entire trilogy of Final Fantasy VII Remake would be available on Switch 2. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (the second part) was released in 2024, but there’s no release date set for the final installment yet.
