Dragon Quest 12 Development Still Ongoing, Creator Confirms

Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate was initially unveiled during a 2021 event marking the series’ 35th anniversary, with only a logo being presented by publisher Square Enix. Since then, there has been minimal information about it, leading some fans to speculate that it might have been put on hold. However, creator Yuji Horii has clarified that he and his team are still actively developing the game.

In a chat with Gamereactor, Horii confirmed that progress on Dragon Quest XII continues. Regarding specific gameplay aspects, he’s tight-lipped, but emphasized his dedication to the project: “I’m working diligently on it… All I can reveal is that the upcoming title will be fantastic.” He also encourages fans to stay hopeful about the series: “All I can suggest is to keep your anticipation high for what’s coming next in the franchise.

Given that the game is expected to release post-Switch 2, there’s speculation about potential plans for this next console, given the franchise’s past triumphs on the original Switch. In a recent interview, Horii hinted at the possibility of Dragon Quest games being playable on the Switch 2, stating, “I think it could be compatible with the Switch 2 as well.

Much of what we currently understand about Dragon Quest XII primarily stems from comments made by Horii around the time of its initial announcement four years back. He revealed that the game aims to offer players a wider range of play styles and choices, as well as a major overhaul to the franchise’s command battle system, which will be handled by Square Enix.

Though we may not see Dragon Quest XII anytime soon, series enthusiasts can anticipate something exciting this year: Preorders for the HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest I and II are now available, set to release in 2025. This update continues from last year’s launch of Dragon Quest III HD-2D.
