Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero’s Yajirobe nerfs have divided players

As a long-time Dragon Ball fan and avid gamer, I must say, the recent update to Dragon Ball Sparking Zero has left me divided. On one hand, I’ve always admired Yajirobe for his bravery and unique abilities in the anime series. However, in the game, his overpowered Senzu Bean ability was becoming a bit too much. The “bean stalling” strategy was indeed antithetical to the spirit of fair play, as one user aptly put it, “It isn’t fun for anybody.


In simpler terms, the latest upgrade for Dragon Ball Sparking Zero has significantly modified one of its contentious characters, causing division among the game’s fanbase regarding the alterations made to Yajirobe’s abilities.

The game’s popularity stems significantly from its accurate portrayal of numerous anime series it derives from. Unlike most fighting games, Dragon Ball Sparking Zero prioritizes replicating the anime over maintaining traditional balance. Consequently, characters who are powerhouses in the show, such as Vegito, excel more compared to less powerful ones like Mr. Satan.

It could come as a shock for those new to the game that Yajirobe, the initial character to undergo changes in the October 2024 update, was the one targeted. The adjustments made by developers to this round, rotund ronin have been welcomed as good news by some, but not everyone shares the same sentiment.

The substantial weakening of the character Yajirobe was due to his bothersome Senzu Bean power, which allows for instant healing and has an unlimited number of uses. This ability, often referred to as “bean stalling,” can keep Yajirobe alive indefinitely, making it difficult for opponents to progress in a game.

In Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, Yajorobe was given these modifications to ensure it wouldn’t be exploited or misused by individuals.

  • The Senzu Bean skill now costs 6 Skill Count instead of 5
  • Yajirobe’s health has been reduced from 3 bars to 2 and a half
  • Yajirobe now begins matches with 0 Skill Count as opposed to 2

Some players on the game’s Reddit forum are expressing joy over the changes, labeling Yajirobe’s adjustments as “justified” and a “significant victory”. One player put it this way: “Bean stalling was too detrimental to the overall experience”. It wasn’t enjoyable for anyone. At least now, those who wish to utilize him will have to be skilled to do so effectively.

Some users have suggested that the reductions (nerfs) might have been a bit too extreme. “To be honest, the HP reduction seems excessive; I believe the adjustments to Skill Stock and the increase in Stocks required are reasonable changes, but it wasn’t necessary to also reduce HP,” one user commented. “Perhaps they could have simply made the character single-use, combined with some of the other nerfs they implemented,” another suggested.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to admit, I took down Great Ape Vegeta just like Yajirobe did in the anime, and it felt pretty accurate given how he was taking out opponents early on in Dragon Ball Sparking Zero. But hey, who knows what new tactics will crop up after these changes? Let’s wait and see!
