Dragon Ball Sparking Zero: How to Sonic Sway, Deflect Beams & more

As a seasoned Dragon Ball Z fan who’s grown up with Goku and his friends through thick and thin, I must say that Dragon Ball Sparking Zero has been quite the rollercoaster ride for me. The game’s intricate mechanics, especially its defensive strategies, have made me appreciate the depth that this series offers.

Just like other fighting games, Dragon Ball Sparking Zero features various moves that players can execute to gain an advantage during combat. However, certain techniques may not be as intuitive or easy to learn compared to others.

Regardless if you’re facing Saiyans, Namekians, or divine fusions, understanding when and how to retreat as well as counterattack is crucial. Techniques like Ki attack deflection and Sonic Sway, which originated from the Tenkaichi trilogy’s Sparking Zero, have been adjusted slightly in their functionality.

If you’ve found yourself somewhat overwhelmed by the sheer number of inputs in-game and want to brush up on your defense, here’s a breakdown of the most important tools at your disposal.

How to Dodge & Step-In Sway

Input: R1/RB (Standard)

Similar to many defensive moves, dodging needs to be timed precisely, meaning the player should press R1/RB slightly before the opponent’s attack hits your character. A successful dodge leads to an evasion, creating an opportunity for a possible counterattack.

How to Step-In Sway

In a slightly enhanced form of regular dodging, the technique called Step-In Sway can be executed by pressing X/A and then R1/RB. This is similar to the Beam Deflects, where correctly timed evasions can be risky. If timed improperly, you will sustain the full impact of your opponent’s attack.

If timing isn’t your strength, opt for the blocking strategy initially as it offers stability at the start. However, remember that excessive reliance might encourage your adversary to employ a Guard Break move. Therefore, aim to vary your strategies instead.

How to Deflect Beams

Input: Triangle+Circle/Y+B

As a passionate fan, let me point out that deflecting beams isn’t without cost. It actually drains two bars from your character’s personal Ki meter, so before you even think about blocking, say, Vegeta’s Galick Gun, make sure you have enough Ki reserves ready to go.

Beyond needing the right resources, there’s also a specific need for timing. We discovered that pressing the necessary combination of buttons (refer to the input) right before an opponent’s attack is launched tends to produce the best and most consistent results.

As a newcomer, I’m finding it takes some time and effort to master the perfect timing for deflecting those beams. Until I can confidently do so, I’m sticking with the more reliable and safer option of blocking them instead.

How to Sonic Sway

Input: Hold Circle/Hold B (Standard)

Amongst the three techniques explained here, mastering Sonic Sway proves to be the most challenging due to its demand for exact timing and a knack for predicting when your adversary might offer an ideal moment for executing this technique effectively.

At the critical instant when your adversary executes a Rush Attack, employing Super Perception will activate Sonic Sway. You’ll be able to confirm whether the sequence was carried out successfully, as distinct visual and auditory signals will be displayed.

By activating Sonic Sway, you’ll gain a chance to evade the Rush and retaliate, lowering your opponent’s energy (Ki) in the process. Sonic Sway can even be used against specific Ki Blasts at the expense of two Ki bars.
