Fans were recently treated to a fascinating look behind the scenes, including rare early character designs and the surprising backstory of how a classic villain’s role was changed over 30 years ago.
A recent update to the official Dragon Ball website’s Toriyama Archives revealed an early design sketch for General Blue from the Red Ribbon Army, as he appeared in the movie Dragon Ball: The Path to Power. However, the sketch actually depicts Colonel Blue, not General Blue, as shown below.
Dragon Ball Reveals Rare 30-Year-Old Character Design for a Red Ribbon Army Villain
The Toriyama Archives recently shared a new drawing of Blue from the movie Dragon Ball: The Path to Power. Since the movie retells the beginning of the series, Blue’s appearance is very similar to how he originally looked, with just a few changes, such as a different hairstyle. They also pointed out that his military rank has been updated from General to Colonel.
Released in 1996, Dragon Ball: The Path to Power was the 17th Dragon Ball movie and the last one made using traditional hand-drawn animation. Directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi with a script by Aya Matsui, the film blends storylines from the original Dragon Ball adventure and the Red Ribbon Army arc.
When Dragon Ball: The Path to Power came out, critics generally gave it average reviews. Many felt the movie was a confusing mix of storylines that worked better as the original anime series. Despite this, the film was popular with audiences, earning over one billion yen in 1996. As of today, it still has a 76% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 100 reviews.
The episode titled “Bluma’s Big Mistake!” featured Goku and Bulma searching for a Dragon Ball. General Blue, a cruel and dangerous leader in the Red Ribbon Army, was a powerful opponent in his own right.
General Blue wasn’t just a skilled fighter; he also possessed powerful psychic abilities. He was best known for his Psychic Eyes, which could completely freeze opponents, leaving them vulnerable. Blue could also use a precise telekinesis called Two Shot Telekinesis, letting him manipulate objects to attack or restrain enemies without directly engaging in combat.
However, that wasn’t the last we saw of him. Blue continued to be a villain during the Super 17 Saga in Dragon Ball GT, even while trapped in Hell.
