‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ Gets Elegant Trailer at CinemaCon: ‘It’s Time to Say Goodbye’

“It’s time to say goodbye.”

The catchphrase for “Downton Abbey: The Final Chapter,” as suggested in a fresh trailer unveiled during CinemaCon on Wednesday.

In simpler terms, all the balls, flower shows, garden parties, ghost tours, and elaborate dinners hosted by the Granthams, known for their high society status in England, have led to this moment. Now, they are preparing to close the doors on their historic estate.

Focus Features unveiled a sneak peek at the sequel during Universal’s showcase for theater owners and industry leaders at CinemaCon, highlighting some of the captivating upstairs-downstairs drama that has made this series so popular. However, unlike before, this installment seems to carry a more melancholic tone. Set in 1930, Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) is seen relishing London’s high society life. In the brief trailer, Lord and Lady Grantham (Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern) are depicted strolling around their estate, their touches on banisters and stone pillars suggesting a sense of closure. Meanwhile, the devoted servants are glimpsed raising a toast to one another, as if honoring each other for years of impeccably laundered linens and perfectly arranged cucumber sandwiches.

Back in 2010, I got hooked on a captivating TV series that originated from ITV. Later, it made its way across the Atlantic to PBS, where I continued following its journey. Over the ensuing 15 years, this show produced an impressive six seasons, tackling topics like wars, economic downturns, and societal changes, as well as releasing three movies. Now, we’re at the finale, wrapping up a story that’s been close to my heart for more than a decade.

In the sequel to “Downton Abbey: A New Era” from 2022, Simon Curtis once again takes the helm, with Julian Fellowes, the show’s creator, writing the script. The original cast members like Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Joanne Froggatt, Phyllis Logan, and Penelope Wilton return, along with some familiar faces from the series such as Paul Giamatti. Additionally, Dominic West, who was part of the previous film, will reprise his role. Newcomers to the franchise include Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan.

“Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” will open in theaters on Sept. 13, 2025.
