Getting ready for Season 3 of “The Gilded Age” as per the 2025 TV lineup has been a delight. However, for co-writer/creator Julian Fellowes, this joy comes with its costs; particularly since the final “Downton Abbey” movie is set to release in the same year. With speculations swirling about the possible intersection of these high society dramas, Fellowes has pointed out a significant hurdle that I find surprising we didn’t notice earlier.
In an interview with TV Insider, the creator of The Gilded Age discussed the recurring theory suggesting that Elizabeth McGovern’s character, Cora Crawley (nee Levinson), could be a key element in a hypothetical crossover episode set before Downton. As usual, Julian Fellowes carefully addressed this query, given his recent addition of a potential obstacle to the plot: the challenge of integrating such a crossover.
Being connected to various networks can create an obstacle, which means we’ll simply need to be patient and observe the situation.
It appears we’ve identified the key players in this TV crossover mystery, but lo and behold, the ‘how’ has unexpectedly appeared, potentially spoiling our celebrations with an overflow of champagne. The dilemma concerning the setting of The Gilded Age arises, as it is exclusively available to HBO Max subscribers for viewing, showcasing the lives of the Van Rhijn family and their associates. Conversely, the escapades of the Downton Abbey characters initially aired on ITV and PBS, now belonging to the Peacock streaming service’s lineup.
Regrettably, it appears that a seamless integration won’t occur because the respective projects belong to distinct organizations.
Despite their differences, there exists an intriguing link between Julian Fellowes’ works that might help bridge the gap. Notably, ‘The Gilded Age’, initially developed by NBC, lists Universal Television as a collaborator in its final version, which was transferred to HBO. Since Universal also owns Peacock, they may have some leverage left due to their involvement, potentially navigating through red tape and finding a way for both productions to coexist.

With plans starting at a modest $9.99 per month, and additional ad-free options for those who prefer a premium experience, HBO Max serves as an affordable gateway to the glamorous world it offers. Granted, it might not grant you direct access to the Met Gala, but it’s undoubtedly your best bet for catching up on the first two seasons of “The Gilded Age.” Moreover, it’s also where new Season 3 episodes will be available as they air. Check out the deal here!
Similar to how Cora Levinson’s family was integral in 1890’s New York, strong family ties and business connections could pave the way for an anticipated event. It would be wise to initiate discussions to gauge if a potential gathering for ‘The Gilded Age’ is advantageous for all parties involved.
It would be quite intriguing to engage in a conversation about possible new installments of “Downton Abbey,” given how eager its fans are. However, for the moment, the realms created by Julian Fellowes remain separate but poised to make their comeback on our screens.

On this coming Sunday at 9 PM Eastern Time, Season 3 of “The Gilded Age” will kick off on HBO and HBO Max. Meanwhile, the final installment of “Downton Abbey,” titled “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,” is set to grace theaters on September 12th. Although a crossover might seem unlikely now, fans can look forward to new adventures in both series starting very soon.
