Doppelgänger Acquires Alex Thompson’s Dark, Psychological Thriller ‘Rounding’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for gripping thrillers and character-driven narratives, I find myself intrigued by the news of “Rounding.” Having spent decades immersed in the world of cinema, I’ve seen my fair share of medical dramas that often veer towards the predictable or melodramatic. However, the synopsis of this film promises a unique blend of personal demons, hospital politics, and a touch of mystery that piques my interest.

Music Box Films’ sub-label, Doppelgänger Releasing, has obtained the distribution rights for the North American region for director Alex Thompson’s thriller “Rounding”. These rights were acquired from global sales agency Visit Films.

This production gathers actors such as Namir Smallwood, known for “American Rust,” Sidney Flanigan from “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” Michael Potts of “The First Lady” and “The Piano Lesson,” along with acclaimed Tony Award-winning director David Cromer.

Following a distressing incident while caring for an elderly patient nearing the end of her life, resident physician James Hayman (Smallwood) opts for a change of scenery, moving to a rural hospital in Greenville, Illinois, for his second year of residency, seeking a fresh beginning. Struggling to form bonds with patients, his supervisor Dr. Harrison (Potts) advises him to be more relatable and enrolls him in a “Bedside Manner” course.

When James gets deeply involved in the case of young asthma patient Helen Adso (Flanigan), ghosts from his past resurface, causing him doubt about the motives of Helen’s mother (Rebecca Spense). As an old injury in his ankle acts up and he encounters hospital red tape, his nightmares intensify, blurring the lines between his dreams and reality.

Following ‘Saint Frances’ (2019), “Rounding” is the subsequent work of Thompson, and it brings back numerous collaborators from the previous project, including actors Kelly O’Sullivan and Charin Alvarez. Later on, Thompson and O’Sullivan teamed up again for “Ghostlight,” which premiered at Sundance in 2024.
