As I sat there, watching yet another Robin Hood tale unfold on the silver screen, I couldn’t help but reflect on the complexities and contradictions that define the American spirit.
In these stories, it is not uncommon for our hero to bend or even break the rules for a higher purpose – a necessity born out of desperation when one’s own survival and that of their fellow outcasts hang in the balance. In essence, they make themselves judge, jury, and executioner, meting out justice where it has been denied them.
This moral gray area is at the heart of what it means to be an American – the struggle between our innate desire for freedom, equality, and justice, and the reality that sometimes, in order to achieve those ideals, we must take matters into our own hands, even if it means stepping outside the law.
In this modern-day interpretation of Robin Hood, we are reminded once again that the line between right and wrong can often be blurred, and that sometimes, doing what’s necessary for the greater good may require us to embrace our inner outlaw.
In the third installment of “Dope Thief“, the chapter takes on a practical yet engaging role, expanding the setting and elevating the mortal risks for the characters. It subtly infuses an urban-western atmosphere into the narrative, leading up to a classic decapitation scene. The story finds Ray Driscoll trapped in Philadelphia, with danger breathing down his neck, but not just any ordinary danger. An ominous, high-stakes drug-dealing menace has emerged, threatening not only him, but also everyone in his circle.
It’s been two days since the robbery, but Manny remains missing. Ray checks out their old hangouts and finds little evidence that the violent biker gang dealing in Aryan meth is actively pursuing them both. Son warns him during his morning jog under a bridge, “Everyone you become close to ends up in your line of fire with you. Everyone you care about.” It would be wise for him to leave the area and give others a better chance to stay safe.
However, it’s not just the oppressive feeling of the heat that has Ray staying put. There remains the idea of becoming a self-made Robin Hood, transforming a lifetime of hardships into a grand triumph. The one prize that could free you and your family from the relentless struggle.
When he finds Theresa at home, safe, Ray attempts to persuade her to help him in a one-person intervention regarding his situation. However, they don’t have much time for discussion since Manny is hiding in the attic and Theresa has just received a call from prison stating that Bart has been stabbed. This news leaves Manny panicking about his relapse and Theresa anxious about reaching the prison in time to be with her lover as he dies. Consequently, Ray decides to drive Theresa to the prison, intending to wait in the car. Flashbacks of being awakened and mistreated by prison guards remind us that Ray has a deep understanding of the horrors behind U.S. prison bars, having experienced them even more than his father.
Kudos to director Tanya Hamilton and her team for crafting and capturing the following scene as a gripping suspense sequence: skillfully placing the audience within the geographical setting of Ray and Michelle, the lawyer, who are at a roadside bar and communicating in code while being encircled by Aryan biker gang members. The only barrier between them and danger is a table of day-drinking prison guards. In this episode, Brian Tyree Henry has had numerous opportunities to showcase his Paper Boi style both in drama and humor (such as his reaction to Theresa insisting he listen to her hesitant intervention), but it’s this scene that truly highlights his exceptional ability to express emotions through his eyes. The dialogue becomes more impactful as Henry and Michelle find the perfect moment to escape the bar with the prison guards. Outstanding performance that delivers both thrilling action and dramatic impact.
After a severe altercation with Bart in the medical facility, it appears that Ray’s fortunes have turned sour. It was discovered later that Bart was intentionally wounded to lure Ray out, and a band of bikers are lying in wait for him outside the prison gates. Within the prison grounds, there is an emotional standoff between the two men. Ray, as he notes, has no cause to be disillusioned with his son, but expressing that sentiment seems to touch on his own self-disappointment. When he exits the prison and the DEA intervenes, preventing what would have been a ruthless execution reminiscent of Sergio Leone westerns (though the timing may stretch credibility for this show, which blends dramatic realism with pulp), Ray uses his second lease on life to rectify past mistakes and convert them into invaluable tokens of affection.
In his first amazing feat, Saint Ray successfully returns Manny to Sherry, informs her that they must destroy her car as it’s been marked, and puts forth a proposal on behalf of Manny using the ring he discovered in Manny’s apartment. It was a fast-paced, action-packed scene (it seemed a bit hurried during editing, but it certainly made me laugh out loud), yet I must admit that Ray manages to pull it off flawlessly.
Unfortunately, no seemingly benign action goes unpunished. In an unexpected turn of events, these young lovers were about to celebrate their engagement, but the drug traffickers ensnared them in a chilling plot involving a severed head. An appalling demise befell a neighborhood pawn shop owner who merely sold a gun to Manny and had the audacity to label the Aryan bikers as a group of fools. As the authorities compile the names of everyone visiting the prison that day, Mina has identified a sketch resembling Ray, wearing a fake DEA uniform. It seems an unfair mountain of misfortune is descending upon any ordinary do-gooder, with each passing day making it feel like simply existing is a crime.
