DoorDash and Uber Eats drivers in NYC now guaranteed $21.44 an hour

New York City is now requiring app-based delivery companies like those used for restaurants and grocery stores to pay their couriers a higher minimum wage.

New rules require delivery apps like Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Instacart to pay their workers a minimum of $21.44 per hour for the time they spend preparing and delivering orders – this doesn’t include tips. The pay rate will also increase each year.

City leaders have announced another increase to the minimum pay for delivery workers. Starting in April, food and grocery delivery drivers will earn at least $22.13 per hour.

What the new rules require

These changes mean grocery delivery drivers will now be paid under the same system as restaurant delivery workers. Apps must calculate their pay based on the time they’re actively working and adhere to the city’s rules for delivery worker compensation.

Companies need to give workers detailed pay stubs and pay them within seven days of when the pay period ends.

There are new rules about tipping now, too. Apps used for delivery services are required to show customers a clear way to add a tip, either with a pre-set amount or a space to enter their own, before they finish their order.

This implementation comes after federal courts dismissed legal objections from multiple companies, clearing the way for the rules to be put in place.

The city will keep raising the minimum wage each year to account for inflation, and the next increase is planned for April 1st.
