Don’t Put This Cartridge In Your Nintendo Switch 2 Or It’ll Be Banned From Online

In less than a month since its release, Nintendo is already taking firm steps to prevent unauthorized use of the Switch 2 by pirates. Reports from users indicate that their consoles have been blocked after utilizing unofficial game cartridges, which some players are suspected of using for illicit ROMs.

According to an article by The Verge, Nintendo is focusing on gaming systems that utilize a MIG Switch cartridge, which holds ROMs that may be either unlawfully acquired or downloaded directly from players’ personal collections. It seems Nintendo isn’t differentiating between the methods used to obtain these ROMs. If Nintendo detects a MIG Switch on a console, it will be permanently blocked from accessing online services.

The YouTube channel Scattered Brain published their findings on the matter, pointing out that resetting the Switch 2 to its original settings won’t lift the ban. Nintendo views utilizing the MIG Switch cartridge as a breach of the Switch 2 User Agreement, and the consequence serves as an expensive cautionary tale for those who ignore the warning.

Looking back, it’s not so unexpected that these actions were taken given Nintendo’s extensive efforts to track down an individual they claimed was a Switch pirate last year. This person was alleged to have sold hardware modifications and provided modified Switch consoles loaded with unauthorized games.

Previously known as the Switch pirate, Gary Bowser, is currently serving prison time and ordered to pay Nintendo a substantial amount of money, which he will continue to pay for an undetermined period.
