Don't Nod Reshifts Development Plans Following Jusant, Banishers Underwhelming Performance

As a devoted fan who has followed Don’t Nod‘s journey since their inception, I must say I am both concerned and intrigued by their recent announcement. It’s disheartening to see a studio known for its innovative storytelling struggle financially, especially when their games have garnered critical acclaim. Yet, the silver lining lies in their decision to refocus on what works best for them – their current IPs.

Don’t Nod, a French developer and publisher, are strategically adapting their development strategy to appeal to a broader market in the future. This announcement follows their release of the H1 2024 financial report during an investor call, where they highlighted several factors that impacted their performance negatively, leading to “a decline in [their] half-year results for 2024.

Looking ahead to their upcoming title, Bloom & Rage, set to hit consoles and PC in February 2025 under Lost Records, the studio has acknowledged that the performance and input from their past games Jusant and Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden didn’t meet their expectations. On a brighter note, they experienced a surge in interest and sales for their established franchises like Life is Strange and Vampyr, significantly boosting their revenue during the first half of 2024.

Let’s take a minute to appreciate the details in #LostRecords Bloom & Rage! 🎶

As per remarks made by Don’t Nod’s CEO, Oskar Guilbert, we are undeniably disheartened by our recent sales performance in a tough, highly competitive market. Although Just Dance and Brawlhalla: Ghosts of New Eden have received outstanding critical acclaim, they have sadly not met the anticipated commercial success. Consequently, this has negatively impacted our financial results for the first half of 2024, forcing us to explore various alternatives concerning our future plans.

To address their lackluster performance in the first half of 2024, the studio plans to shift their attention towards their existing intellectual properties for a better financial yield. This strategy involves dedicating resources to their upcoming game, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, set to launch in February 2025, and two unannounced projects that Don’t Nod has hinted at releasing sometime in 2027.

Regrettably, the studio has chosen to postpone work on two undisclosed projects that were under design. This move enables the studio to allocate resources effectively and boosts the likelihood of success for their most promising projects at present.
