Initially, the movie was given a restricted screening in U.S. cinemas starting from November 1, with the aim of meeting Oscar eligibility requirements. Subsequently, it became available on Netflix from November 13, 2025.

Ever since the Twitter scandal surfaced, the streamer has found itself in an unfortunate predicament. For instance, Karla Sofia Gascón was eliminated from Oscar campaign advertisements, and Bela Bajaria, the Chief Content Officer, expressed this sentiment on The Town podcast: “It’s truly disappointing for the 100 exceptionally skilled individuals who crafted an outstanding film. Given the nominations and all the awards appreciation it has received, I believe it’s a shame that it overshadowed their achievements.

What’s the movie about?

In this Netflix summary, the formidable drug cartel boss Emilia (Karla Sofia Gascón) recruits Rita (Zoe Saldaña), a lawyer feeling undervalued in her monotonous job, to help orchestrate a ruse where Emilia pretends to die. This way, Emilia can finally embrace her true identity openly.

Jacques Audiard, the filmmaker, pens the script and directs this project, viewing it as a musically operatic piece. He shared with Netflix that during the initial lockdown, he penned a treatment swiftly, discovering along the way that it bore resemblance to an opera libretto rather than a conventional screenplay – it was divided into acts, boasted minimal sets, and featured archetypal characters.

Saldaña shares her experience of grasping this unique concept, stating: “It was described to me as a film noir that didn’t fit any traditional genres, but it was a musical. In actuality, it was an opera set in the crime world, yet promising themes of justice, validation, and sanctification. I was taken aback at first, needing to read it multiple times.
