When Tramell Tillman’s cheerful and carefree persona, Mr. Milchick, debuts formally for the first time in the mysterious “Severance” pilot, guiding Mark (Adam Scott) towards Ms. Cobel’s (Patricia Arquette) new office, it seems almost impossible that someone in his position could ever entertain any trace of doubts.
As the series progresses, Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller’s workplace drama unfolds more complex aspects of the hierarchical structure on the floor that has been divided, requiring some real Lumon employees to suppress these layers as much as they would the company’s secretive board. In a chilling, detached setting, Tillman brings humor, vigor, and profound depth to Milchick, making him a character who is more than just a stereotypical villain – one that viewers must truly grapple with over two seasons.
In his struggle to command the Macrodata Refinement team members, eventually ascending to the position of floor manager, Mr. Milchick embodies Lumon’s puppet perfectly. He adheres to regulations, organizes waffle gatherings for his staff, and even shows off some dance steps when necessary (details on that forthcoming). However, one must wonder about the ultimate purpose behind all these actions.
Season 2 allows Tillman to explore Milchick’s beliefs more thoroughly, particularly through the unsettling plotline involving Natalie (played by Sydney Cole Alexander), who is one of Lumon’s highest-ranking Black employees besides Tillman. Following Milchick’s discovery of paintings depicting Kier, Lumon’s most significant symbol, in blackface, he attempts to reach out to Natalie in a rare display of vulnerability. However, when Natalie responds with a mere smile, Milchick is forced to suppress his emotions. This scene, filled with complexity and depth, is one of the most impactful in the series, largely due to Tillman’s skillful portrayal through subtle body language.
I, too, showcase my command over vocal delivery as Milchick skillfully articulates and manipulates words to create impact, a trait that soon became one of my defining qualities. After the intense, action-packed Season 2 finale left audiences breathless, it’s no wonder I was given the opportunity to share the screen with Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.” In this film, Milchick exerts every ounce of his strength – nearly succeeding – in bringing down that stubborn vending machine for good.
Certainly, to truly understand Tillman’s charm, you mustn’t overlook his exceptional dancing abilities. The electrifying chaos of the marching band sequence in the Season 2 finale is amplified by the obvious joy Tillman exudes, a fact that has contributed significantly to its viral popularity. He absolutely commands that scene.
Tillman’s unrestrained happiness in such infrequent instances gives a burst of new vigor to our frosty workplace. It also offers a glimpse into the sort of life Milchick may have lived prior to dedicating himself to Lumon’s mission.
In the show, actors like Scott, Britt Lower, John Turturro, and Zach Cherry have roles that let them display their acting versatility by playing both inward and outward characters. Meanwhile, performers such as Tillman are confined to characters strictly involved in the Lumon narrative, which demands a more nuanced portrayal of internal struggles. It takes an accomplished and captivating actor like Tillman to evoke cheers when Milchick tells Mr. Drummond (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) to go “eat dirt” and feelings of relief when the band manages to keep him from chasing after Mark and Helly (Lower).
As Season 2’s suspenseful finale paves the way for Season 3, there’s ample opportunity for Tillman to delve deeper into his character’s past. Since Mr. Milchick has hit a critical juncture, the possibilities are endless – that is, if Milchick can break free from the self-imposed confines he’s built around himself.
