Don’t Expect PlayStation’s Current PC Port Strategy To Change Anytime Soon

In the midst of Xbox adopting a multi-platform publishing approach, Sony is emphasizing its dedication to focusing on the PlayStation 5. During a recent gathering for Sony’s business and an informal discussion, PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst underlined that they are carefully considering and moving cautiously when it comes to deciding whether or not a first-party game will be released on other platforms such as PC.

For quite some time now, Sony has been transferring its top-tier games to PC platforms. Titles such as Helldivers 2 and Concord (which unfortunately didn’t last), launched simultaneously for consoles and PC. On the other hand, major single-player games like God of War: Ragnarok or Ghost of Tsushima follow a pattern where they debut on PS5 initially, with a PC release at least a year later.

When questioned about the trend of multi-platform games and Sony’s approach to preserving the worth of the PlayStation 5 system, Hulst made it clear that Sony doesn’t plan on altering their existing game strategy.

Hulst emphasized that bringing our franchises from consoles to other platforms is crucial to reach more people. He also stressed that we’re being extremely careful and thoughtful in this process. Specifically, when it comes to our major single-player games, these are a significant part of what sets PlayStation apart from others.

He further emphasized that Sony’s initial exclusive games are designed to highlight the capabilities of the PlayStation 5, aiming to provide players with an optimal gaming experience when playing these titles on the PS5.

Hulst stated that we carefully consider both when, whether, and how we make these titles available on different platforms.

Microsoft seems to be finding success as they continue to push their multiplatform game strategy, releasing Xbox titles on PS5. When asked about this approach, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino expressed that he views competition within the industry as beneficial for innovation, but is firmly confident and dedicated to Sony’s existing strategy.

Apart from emphasizing their stance on platform exclusivity, Sony also reinforced their dedication towards live-service games. In particular, Hulst expressed his viewpoint that Bungie’s upcoming shooter Marathon is unlikely to experience the same issues regarding exclusivity as Concord did.
