At $70, some people may find Borderlands 4 a bit too expensive to buy on its release day. However, fortunately, Borderlands 3 is currently quite affordable due to the Steam Summer Sale, with its price dropping significantly. On Twitter, Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox, commented that the 95% discount on Borderlands 3, reducing its price from $60 to just $3, occurred five years after the game’s initial release. Yet, don’t expect a similar low price for Borderlands 4 anytime soon after its launch, as Pitchford warned to keep expectations in checkit may not be available at an affordable price like a cup of coffee or on subscription services such as Xbox Game Pass, any time soon.
Borderlands 3, which initially launched five years ago, has recently appeared on console subscription services. Don’t miss out while you can! It might take just as long, or even longer, for something similar to happen again in the next gaming cycle with Borderlands 4.” – Pitchford tweeted.
In recent times, when the typical cost of an AAA video game has climbed from $70 to $80 (after remaining at $60 for several decades), the announcement that Borderlands 4 would cost $70 was met with approval by many enthusiasts. However, this price is only for the standard version of the game, as the premium editions of this looter-shooter will be sold at a higher rate. Additionally, it’s common to find discounts, and usually, the price on a newly launched game drops about 10-15% several months following its release.
Absolutely, when there’s sufficient motivation, plans often shift. Interestingly, Borderlands 3, which debuted not long ago in 2019, became available for free on the Epic Games Store in May 2022. Remarkably, it was also distributed free of charge through PS Plus in July 2024.
At a noteworthy juncture for subscription services, Pitchford’s remark holds significance, given ongoing debates among developers and publishers over platforms like Xbox Game Pass. Notably, ex-head of PlayStation Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, has raised concerns about these services. Yet, he also mentioned that Sony’s strategy is more beneficial as they only incorporate first-party releases after several years post-launch, implying a healthier approach.
Simultaneously, developer Rebellion launched their latest title, Atomfall, which proved to be an instant financial success, prompting the studio to discuss why releasing it via Game Pass was a sound business move. Conversely, other developers have voiced concerns about Game Pass, and Microsoft has had to respond to claims that the service might negatively impact game sales by potentially cannibalizing them.
