Donkey Kong: Bananza revealed during Nintendo Switch 2 Direct

Today during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, it was not a new 3D Mario game that was announced as many had expected. Instead, what was revealed was an entirely novel approach to a 3D Donkey Kong game, reminiscent of the style seen in “Donkey Kong 64”. The title of this upcoming game is “Donkey Kong: Bananza”. For those who were attentive during the January Switch 2 reveal trailer, you might have noticed that Donkey Kong appeared differently than his usual self. Now we finally know why this change occurred.

Donkey Kong: Bananza, a new 3D Donkey Kong game revealed during Switch 2 Direct

In various spin-offs of the game Mario, the well-known figure Donkey Kong can be found. He’s a regular in Mario Kart, including the latest Mario Kart World, and is also featured in series like Mario Party and every Mario sports game. However, when it comes to his own games, Donkey Kong has primarily been confined to the 2D gaming world. Since the release of Donkey Kong 64 for the Nintendo 64 back in 1999, the endearing ape hasn’t ventured into a full 3D game world again.

In the game titled “Donkey Kong: Bananza,” the action unfolds within an unusual subterranean realm. The teaser reveals Donkey Kong roaming expansive, open spaces brimming with peculiar adversaries and captivating backdrops. The character seems more lively and comical compared to previous appearances, boasting a fresh design and even donning overalls for the first time. A significant aspect of the gameplay appears to revolve around destructible environments, allowing for increased freedom in exploration.

The game Donkey Kong demonstrates a character plunging headfirst into the ground, hammering the earth, and even grabbing debris to blast through the scenery. If this unique movement mechanic is adaptable across various levels in the game, it could lead to an exceptionally innovative gaming experience. However, considering Nintendo’s track record for introducing creative mechanics, this isn’t entirely surprising. It appears that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will primarily serve as an improvement over its predecessor rather than a drastic departure.

From what we’ve seen in the two-minute trailer for Donkey Kong: Bananza, not a lot is known about the game. However, there are some details that can be gleaned from certain scenes. It seems that Donkey Kong will be accompanied by a small companion throughout his journey, somewhat similar to Super Mario Odyssey’s Cappy. This peculiar purple, rock-like creature appears to ride on Donkey Kong’s shoulder. Additionally, we catch brief glimpses of vibrant characters and possibly hints at potential boss battles and significant enemies.

It’s great news! The release of “Donkey Kong: Bananza” is scheduled to follow closely behind the Nintendo Switch 2, happening as early as July 17th, 2025.
