Donald Glover Says ‘Star Wars’ Is ‘Way Too Serious’ Sometimes and Hopes a Lando Movie Brings Fun Back: ‘We Have a Responsibility to Have Enjoyment’

As a long-time film enthusiast who has seen his fair share of blockbusters and indie films alike, I can confidently say that Donald Glover‘s return as Lando Calrissian fills me with unadulterated joy. The “Star Wars” franchise has been somewhat heavy-handed in recent years, and it’s refreshing to hear that Glover wants to inject some fun back into the galaxy far, far away.

Donald Glover plans to reprise his role as beloved “Star Wars” character Lando Calrissian in a film he’s co-creating with his brother Stephen Glover for Disney and Lucasfilm. Their aim is simply to infuse some fun and excitement back into the “Star Wars” universe.

As a fellow Star Wars enthusiast, I wholeheartedly agree that the essence of this franchise should be about having a blast! During a recent chat with The Wall Street Journal, this sentiment was clearly expressed. Fun, after all, is what makes Star Wars such an enduring and beloved saga.

Glover added, “It’s quite challenging to find joy these days.” The reason is that there are many heavy and important events occurring, which are the only things linking us together oddly. While I understand the gravity of the situation, I feel we have a duty as humans to seek pleasure. Unfortunately, it seems we’re falling short in this aspect.

Glover expressed that, despite his affection for the “Star Wars” series, it can get quite intense at times, even excessively so. He feels that everything concerning the Skywalkers is overly serious. However, he believes Lando Calrissian’s charm lies in his scoundrel nature, something people might find relatable. In essence, he wants to add a touch of fun to “Star Wars”. He simply desires the franchise to be more light-hearted and enjoyable for everyone.

The Emmy winner from Atlanta first appeared as Lando Calrissian in the 2018 blockbuster “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” produced by Disney and Lucasfilm. Regrettably, this film didn’t perform as well financially as expected. In July 2023, it was announced that the Glover brothers would take over from Justin Simien to write a new Lando series for Disney+, but EbMaster reported in September that instead, it had become a “Lando” movie.

In a 2023 interview with GQ magazine, Glover mentioned that he was having discussions with Lucasfilm regarding another Lando-focused project within the “Star Wars” universe. He added, “We’re discussing it, but I can’t say much more without Kathleen Kennedy coming after me.

Lando embodies charisma,” Glover remarked then. “He’s somewhat of a rule-breaker, which isn’t common nowadays. It’s tough to pull off smooth-talking in today’s world. Finding the balance is tricky; that’s where the risk lies. I’d enjoy playing Lando again. It’s an enjoyable role, but it needs to be handled carefully. Time is valuable.
