A woman in Oregon is on the mend after a rescue operation where her dog was crucial in helping search teams find her. She had become lost in difficult landscape.
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office announced on December 29th that Karen Joyce Davis of Elmira had been reported missing. She was last seen earlier that day while walking in the woods with her dog, Cami, a blue heeler.
So, they finally found Davis! It took a really long search, and apparently he was way out in some rough, tricky terrain. Glad they located him, though!
Search teams say dog helped lead rescuers to missing woman
The sheriff’s office reported that Cami remained with Davis after she disappeared, providing warmth and ultimately alerting Lane County Search & Rescue by barking as they searched.
According to officials, the woman stayed warm thanks to her dog, Cami, who also helped rescuers from Lane County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue locate her as they were searching.
Rescuers gave Davis first aid for hypothermia right where she was found, then carried her out of the woods and took her to the hospital.

Pictures released by officials showed Cami leaning against Davis, with volunteers gathered around the woman they’d rescued. Other photos showed rescuers comforting the dog and emphasized how thick and shadowy the woods were during the search.
Lookout Eugene-Springfield, a local news source, later provided more information about the rescue. Katie Sciotto, a volunteer with the search and rescue team, explained to the news outlet that Davis is believed to have dementia and that Cami, a dog who almost never barks, probably wouldn’t come when called.
After searching for hours, Sciotto started calling the dog’s name and heard a faint bark from around 300 yards away.
Sciotto explained that he and his two team members rushed directly toward the sound of the barking, and they stumbled and fell as they moved through the rough landscape.
Sciotto emphasized that Cami’s quick response was essential to the rescue. He explained that with temperatures close to freezing, Davis likely wouldn’t have survived the night if he hadn’t been found.
