When David Tennant reappeared as the fourteenth Doctor on Doctor Who, it was widely announced beforehand. However, his arrival broke the show’s usual pattern. Fans of the series were prepared for this twist, but Russell T. Davies had another surprise in store: an unannounced regeneration in the final episode of Ncuti Gatwa’s second season as the fifteenth Doctor.
Not only does Gatwa’s Doctor bear an uncanny resemblance to David Tennant, but surprisingly, he transforms into the likeness of a well-known character from “Doctor Who” – Billie Piper. Familiar to fans as Rose Tyler, she appeared alongside Christopher Eccleston in the show’s reboot and continued with the series for much of David Tennant’s initial tenure. The twist here is that it seems Piper has taken on the role of the Doctor, leaving fans puzzled about what this means for the series.
In the final episode, titled “The Reality War,” the Doctor, Belinda Chandra (played by Varada Sethu), and Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) engaged in an intense struggle against the ominous trio known as the Ranis, comprised of Archie Panjabi and Anita Dobson, alongside Conrad Clark (Jonah Hauer-King). This conflict was a battle for the very essence of reality.
Typically, after heartfelt episodes conclude, The Doctor often spares a minute to verify on his latest travelers. Then, unexpectedly, the audience is treated to a brief glimpse of Piper as his newly transformed self, leaving fans in awe.
To date, there hasn’t been any update regarding the series’ future, as creator Davies has been rather secretive about the upcoming plans. Earlier, he mentioned:
“We won’t make a decision about what happens next until after season 2. It’s amusing because even those involved in the show speculate that we must be having secret discussions. Every year, my colleagues ask me, ‘What’s really going on?’ and I assure them, ‘There are no meetings or decisions happening.'”
