Doctor Who’s Anita Dobson Reveals Shocking Truth About Her Season 2 Character!

Recently, the world experienced a significant upheaval. In the closing moments of the episode titled “The Intergalactic Song Competition,” the enigmatic Mrs. Flood unmasked herself.

Initially, it was discovered that Mrs. Flood was none other than the character known as the Rani. Shortly after this secret emerged, there appeared two versions of her – the original Mrs. Flood (played by Anita Dobson) and the actual Rani (portrayed by Archie Panjabi). This sudden duplication may have left some viewers perplexed, but it was a significant moment for dedicated fans.

However, showrunner Russell T Davies didn’t necessarily stick to the traditional portrayal of the character, Mrs. Flood. Some fans might find this acceptable given the unique take on the character. Dobson clarified in an interview that he was unaware of the character’s development in Season 1 due to his enjoyment of Russell’s diverse character elements and unexpected quirks. The speculation about Mrs. Flood’s role began when Davies asked Dobson to return for Season 2.

Much of the conjecture revolved around her potentially being the Rani, yet some others speculated she could be Susan, the Doctor’s long-lost granddaughter. However, “The Interstellar Song Contest” effectively debunked this theory too.

Dobson admitted he was content in his ignorance beforehand, but as time passed, his curiosity grew. When fans proposed interesting theories about the Rani’s role, Dobson considered it a possibility, but Russell T Davies hinted otherwise. This left Dobson surprised when he finally discovered the truth from the last few scripts.

Dobson Had A Great Time Playing Mrs Flood

Dobson mentioned that Russell made it clear that Mrs. Flood is always Mrs. Flood, no matter where or what she’s doing. This conviction sealed the deal for Dobson. When speaking with Russell, they rarely question him because of their deep trust in him and his captivating stories. Dobson simply feels that it’s best to let Russell tell the story and she serves as a means to bring it to life on screen.

The actress also pondered on the nature of the two queens – essentially, what type of individuals they were. “Both share a common ambition, yet their methods vary. One takes care of media interactions while the other does the behind-the-scenes work in the lab. In essence, I view one queen as an enabler. She adores power but prefers not to be directly in the spotlight. Instead, she assists and empowers the one holding power, all while pursuing her own objectives. However, when it comes time for them to bear the brunt of criticism, she steps back.

She found an instant connection with Panjabi from the get-go, and it’s been a delightful bond ever since. She’s striving to maintain contact, she shared. Their onscreen relationship might be unique, but in her mind, they’re more like sisters. When Archie enters the picture, the fun really ramps up.
