Following the broadcast of Season 2 of “Doctor Who” throughout April and May, the Whoniverse will make a comeback to our screens with its first spin-off since the 2016 series “Class”. The specific release date for this new show, titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea“, has not been announced yet. However, showrunner Russell T. Davies recently shared some insights about its development with TopMob.
The filming for this project was carried out from August through December 2024, spanning various spots within Wales, United Kingdom, as well as capturing scenes in Mallorca, Spain.
The main plotline hints at the reemergence of UNIT to avert an impending worldwide conflict, alongside an age-old enemy from “Doctor Who,” the Sea Devils, who have secretly resided on Earth.
It’s crucial for UNIT to act swiftly when an enigmatic marine species, the Sea Devils, emerges from the ocean, exposing themselves to human civilization, potentially leading to a new era of conflict.
Jemma Redgrave will once again play UNIT commander Kate Lethbridge Stewart, joined by Colonel Ibrahim (played by Alexander Devrient) and Ruth Madely as Shirley Ann Bingham. The actress from “Loki,” Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and the actor from “Gavin & Stacey,” Russell Tovey, have also signed up for new roles in this series, although they’ve previously appeared in the Doctor Who universe.
This series was crafted by Russell T. Davies and Pete McTighe, who have a history of penning episodes for Doctor Who. Specifically, Davies wrote Episodes 1 and 5, while McTighe handled Episodes 2 and 3. They collaborated on writing Episode 4 as well.
Doctor Who Showrunner Offers Updates on Upcoming Spin-Off
“It’s a bit older than ‘Doctor Who.'”
Recently, Sam Hargrave from TopMob had an exclusive interview with Russell T. Davies, the showrunner of Doctor Who. During this conversation, he was able to query Davies about the upcoming spin-off titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea” in the lead-up to Season 2.
Additionally, the showrunner shared tantalizing glimpses into the development process, describing the spin-off as “truly stunning” and “incredible, action-packed scenes” filmed in the traditional shooting locale of Cardiff, Wales.
It’s worth noting that he mentioned the series, “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” is expected to be more mature due to its age compared to shows like “Doctor Who.” Consequently, it might be scheduled for a later time slot on BBC One in the U.K. and Ireland for viewers tuning in live TV.
- TopMob: “Do you have any plans for a Christmas special this year, and can you give any updates on The War Between the Land and the Sea spin-off?”
Russell T. Davies mentioned there haven’t been any recent announcements regarding “Doctor Who,” so fans will simply need to stay tuned for future developments as discussions are ongoing.
In a recent edit session for the film “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” I must say, it’s truly breathtaking! The visuals are a stark departure from what one might anticipate, and I find them utterly captivating. Some of the most grandiose scenes ever filmed in Cardiff are included, and they are nothing short of stunning. Moreover, Russell Tovey delivers an exceptional performance as the lead character.
The show we’re talking about isn’t exactly like ‘Doctor Who,’ but it predates it slightly. It’s not as ancient as ‘Torchwood’ was when it aired, though. I’d describe it as appealing to an audience who would typically watch TV around 8 PM, rather than earlier in the evening or late at night – unless, of course, you’re referring to streaming, where it could be watched at any time.
However, it’s truly delightful. We are eagerly looking forward to showing it to Russell and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. It’s been a while since we haven’t presented any episodes yet, so it’s high time for us to gather together and watch it with them, as it’s simply fantastic.
- TopMob: “When do you think fans will be seeing that? Do you have any idea of a release date?”
Russell T. Davies: “I have a very specific idea, and you’re not getting that out of me, Sam.”
It appears that, assuming everything proceeds smoothly, the Doctor Who team is already aware of when The War Between the Land and the Sea will air. This spin-off series will be akin to Doctor Who and will stream globally on Disney+ in all regions.

When Will The War Between the Land and the Sea Release on Disney+?
At present, no announcements have been made about Doctor Who filming a Christmas Special in 2025, as the series has only been commissioned up until the end of Season 2. A decision regarding the show’s future won’t be made until after the finale, which is scheduled for late May. This means it seems rather improbable that they could produce a holiday special in time for this year.
Filming for “Doctor Who” Season 2 concluded in May 2024 and will debut on screens worldwide approximately one year later. As the spin-off series has fewer episodes and completed production in December 2024, it might be broadcast towards the end of 2025. However, it could also be held back until early 2026 to create more distance between it and Season 2.
It’s anticipated that when Season 2 concludes in May, the Doctor Who team may start unveiling more details about the upcoming Sea Devil storyline. Since UNIT is set to appear in multiple episodes this year, it might just set the stage for the approaching underwater conflict hinted at in the near future.
As a movie critic, I can’t help but wonder what lies ahead for “Doctor Who” beyond “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” as the BBC has been rather tight-lipped about the show’s future. However, recent whispers suggest that the series may have taken a hiatus, and Ncuti Gatwa, our current Doctor, might be stepping down after Season 2. Only time will tell if these rumors hold any water.
Although the exact launch date for “The War Between the Land and the Sea” remains undisclosed, it’s anticipated that it will debut on both Disney+ and BBC One as well as BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
