Doctor Who Shocks Fans with Surprise Return of Classic Character in Latest Episode!

Warning: This discussion reveals plot points from the sixth episode of Doctor Who’s second season, titled “The Interstellar Song Contest.” You can currently watch this episode on BBC iPlayer and Disney+.

In the recently released second-season episode, showrunner Russell T Davies has shared insights on the appearance of an iconic cast member. The Doctor, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa, experienced a potent vision during a critical juncture in this installment.

In the Saturday episode on May 18, The Doctor and Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) were taking pleasure in an interstellar equivalent of the Eurovision Song Contest when two outlaws from the Hellion species – Kid (Freddie Fox) and Wynn Aura-Kin (Iona Anderson) – suddenly assaulted the spectators, hurling them into deep space. Though Belinda remained unscathed, The Doctor was hurled into the frigid skies above the arena and was close to succumbing to frostbite. Yet, in a critical instant, The Doctor experienced a vision of – reprising her role from the original Doctor Who series – encouraging him to resist and save himself. This small spark ignited within The Doctor the determination to somehow shatter the hold of space and thwart the Hellions’ scheme.

Doctor Who Brings Back Original Cast Member in Latest Episode

On Saturday, the backstage web series presented an episode with interviews, both from Ford and ‘Doctor Who’ showrunner Russell T. Davies, discussing Susan’s long-anticipated comeback. Davies revealed that he himself asked “The Interstellar Song Contest” writer Juno Dawson to include Susan in her script.

In a critical situation during The Doctor’s life when he was suspended in space, potentially nearing death, I desired something extraordinary to revive him. He elaborated, “It was an inspiring moment collaborating with Juno on the script, asking her, ‘Could you please include Susan? Could Susan materialize before him and thaw him out of his deep freeze?’

The producer continued, “She exclaimed, ‘Wow! Am I really going to do that?!’ Then, Carole Ann Ford made her entrance at the studio. Everything was kept under wraps, the doors were closed, everyone was asked to sign confidentiality agreements, and she was secretly brought into the TARDIS. I believe Ben A. Williams directed that scene exceptionally well.

At one of the gatherings honoring “Doctor Who” as it turned 60 in 2023, Ford disclosed that Davies had personally asked Jodie Whittaker if she would consider reprising her role on the show.

At a party where “Star Beast” was being screened, we first encountered each other. It had been our mutual desire to meet, but until then, we hadn’t crossed paths. As we embraced, she recollected, it was a joyous reunion with excited shouts and warm hugs. In the midst of this, Russell inquired, “Would you like to return?” To which I replied, “Yes, of course!” He then declared triumphantly, “Well, that’s good because you are coming back!”

In a party setting for the viewing of “Star Beast,” our paths finally crossed. We had both eagerly anticipated this moment. As we greeted each other with hugs and enthusiastic cheers, she reminisced, it was a long-awaited reunion. In the midst of our embrace, Russell asked, “Would you like to come back?” I immediately responded, “Yes, of course!” To which he exclaimed, “Well, that’s good because you are coming back!

The Eurovision Song Contest Was Founded in 1956

  • The nations of Europe created the Song Contest as a way to foster unity and togetherness in the wake of World War II.
  • Eurovision has launched the careers of iconic musicians like ABBA, Celine Dion and Olivia Newton-John
  • Ncuti Gatwa was supposed to announce the U.K. jury votes in Saturday’s Eurovision finals but pulled out due to “unforeseen circumstances.” He was replaced by singer Sophie Ellis Bextor.

The actress attributed the strong support from the “fan base” of the Doctor Who series as the reason for Susan’s return, following a 32-year hiatus. She was last seen in the 1993 mini-episode titled “Dimensions in Time,” where she momentarily joined forces with Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor to combat The Rani’s ambitions of global conquest.

Carole Ann Ford was secretly summoned to the studio. All operations were halted, everything was locked up tight, and everybody had to sign confidentiality agreements before she could enter the TARDIS.

It’s quite intriguing that the event coincides with the comeback of The Rani in “The Interstellar Song Contest”. Interestingly, she was portrayed by Archie Panjabi this time around. The enigmatic Time Lady was unmasked as Mrs Flood, a character who appeared to have split existence, enabling Panjabi’s version of The Rani to orchestrate a plot aimed at defeating The Doctor. Keep an eye out for more developments on that in the coming week!
