DNC: Mindy Kaling Jokes She ‘Courageously Outed Kamala Harris as Indian’ and Praises ‘Values Her Mother Passed Down’

As a long-time admirer of Mindy Kaling, I was thoroughly enchanted by her heartwarming and humorous address during the third night of the Democratic National Convention. Her ability to weave personal anecdotes with political advocacy is truly commendable. The story about Kamala Harris‘ visit to her home and their shared bond over their late mothers was particularly moving, as it highlighted the commonalities that bind us all, regardless of our backgrounds or positions in life.

On the third evening of the Democratic National Convention, comedian and popular TV personality Mindy Kaling graced the stage, expressing her backing for Kamala Harris’s presidential bid – a woman she refers to as a close friend.

Following a jest about revealing Vice President Kamala Harris’ Indian heritage during an Instagram cooking video, Kaling recounted some insights from their initial encounter.

“At that time, she wasn’t Madam Vice President yet; instead, she was my senator. One day, she dropped by my home for a video shoot where we prepared South Indian dosas together. I must admit, I was a bit jittery having a senator in my house, but as soon as she arrived, we found an instant connection. We reminisced about the affection we shared for our mothers who had both lost their lives to cancer. Our moms were immigrants from India who dedicated their lives to helping others in America.”

Kaling pointed out that whereas her mom pursued a career as an OB-GYN, Harris’ mother, Shyamala, was a researcher seeking a cancer cure. To me, it seemed evident that Shyamala had instilled the same hopefulness and courage in her daughter.

“However, what stands out most to me about the Vice President is that Kamala Harris has a knack for cooking, as Kaling playfully remarked, followed by her admiration for Harris’ kindness towards Kaling’s kids,” (or)

“Although she outshone me in skill, she was mindful of my family’s presence while guiding me through the process of making dosas. Throughout the correction of my mistakes, she consistently praised me, ensuring that my daughter, Kit, recognized my cooking abilities. She harbored no ambition to appear superior. Instead, she aimed to make my child admire her as a mother.”

Harris only managed to take one bite of the dosa, Kaling said, “but it is that warmth, that generosity of spirit that I know she will bring to the White House as our next president. Kamala Harris cares deeply about other people. She will fight to protect our freedoms, because those are the values that her mother passed down to her.”

Kaling ended her speech by encouraging everyone, emphasizing that besides Harris, there are other names that will appear on the ballot in November as well.

“For Democrats to safeguard our freedoms, it’s crucial that they take control of the House,” she stated, introducing U.S. House Minority Leader and future Speaker of the House, congressman Hakeem Jeffries, in a playful tone. We have a lot of work ahead.

Later in the evening, following a speech by ex-President Bill Clinton, I, as a movie critic, found myself chuckling at the witty references to recent celebrity headlines made by Mindy Kaling.

“She started by acknowledging the fantastic group from her hometown, Massachusetts, before leaving. A big shout-out to you, Massachusetts! I’m really fond of you,” she said.

“She expressed that everyone seems to be critical of us, yet they simply fail to understand. Cheer on the Sox, cheer on Jayson Tatum! Keep going, Ben Affleck!” She made this remark, as Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from the actor on Tuesday.

“She firmly believes that Dunkin Donuts serves the finest coffee globally,” she asserted, noting that Affleck frequently appears in pictures with cups from this quick-service café.
