DNC Host Tony Goldwyn on Meeting Kamala Harris for the First Time and a Potential Taylor Swift Endorsement: ‘Could Be Significant’

As a movie lover with a soft spot for political dramas and a deep appreciation for the art of storytelling, experiencing the energy at the 2024 Democratic National Convention was nothing short of electrifying. I’ve been fortunate to have rubbed shoulders with many influential figures in my time, but meeting Vice President Kamala Harris last night was a truly unforgettable moment.

Until Monday evening at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Tony Goldwyn hadn’t previously encountered Vice President Kamala Harris.

And what an introduction it was.

On the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, Goldwyn, our host, followed Kamala Harris’ unexpected entrance and addressed the energized audience, saying, “Welcome! And what a fantastic opening act we just had!”

On Sunday, it was announced that Goldwyn and his “Scandal” co-star Kerry Washington, together with Mindy Kaling and Ana Navarro, will be hosting this year’s Democratic National Convention from Sunday through Thursday. Goldwyn will kick off the event on Monday, followed by Navarro on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it will be Mindy Kaling’s turn to host, and finally, on Thursday, Kerry Washington will take over as the convention reaches its climax. This is the night when Kamala Harris is expected to officially accept the party’s nomination.

“Goldwyn shared with me on Tuesday morning that he’s had multiple encounters with President Biden, but hadn’t met Vice President Harris until recently. He spoke to Doug Emhoff on the phone a few months back regarding campaign assistance, and finally got to meet him not long ago. The experience was exciting for Goldwyn, and afterwards, he had the pleasure of meeting her personally. She even approached him and expressed gratitude.”

How did your hosting gig come about?

I was given the opportunity to serve as a surrogate for the campaign, especially after President Biden announced his resignation and Vice President Kamala Harris took over, sparking a massive wave of enthusiasm. I responded, “Whatever you require from me.” They inquired if I would attend the convention, and I said, as long as my work commitments permit, and what are your thoughts? They suggested, “We have an idea. Would you be interested in hosting the opening night?” Fortunately, my schedule permitted it.

What was it like walking onto that stage?

Truly, I’ve never experienced such exhilaration before. It was akin to stepping onto a massive ocean swell. Being asked to participate was a great honor, and despite the lengthy hours, it turned out to be an incredibly enjoyable evening.

I will say you that watching you last night that I got a little teary-eyed for “Scandal.” It felt like I was watching President Grant up there.

You’re right. When I told Shonda Rhimes I was doing it, I told her that life imitates her art.

You and Kerry are bookending the convention with you on the first night and Kerry the last night. Does this mean we’re getting closer to a “Scandal” reunion or movie?

Actually, I’m not connected to any “Scandal” [laughs], but rather, I stand as a fellow American citizen, deeply worried about our nation.

Is there a chance that you and Kerry will walk out on the convention stage together at some point this week?

I would say those chances are slim. But if Kamala asked us to, I suppose we would.

How confident are you that Kamala will win?

I’m quite hopeful, not overly confident, considering the events of 2016 that left some with post-traumatic stress. There’s a lot of work ahead since half the nation supports President Trump, who has a dedicated following. I believe many voters are still unfamiliar with her, but as they get to know her, their opinions seem to be improving. The polls indicate this trend – the more people learn about her, the more they appear to like her. I’m very optimistic and can feel the positive vibe. The fact that all President Trump can do is question her ethnicity and origins, including resurfacing the birther issue, shows he’s struggling to find a valid attack against her. Our task is simply to continue sharing her story and allowing people to get to know her better.

What was it like watching President Biden deliver his speech?

I found myself deeply moved by the event. The crowd’s affection for him was palpable, almost overwhelming – they barely gave him a chance to speak. From where I stood, history seems poised to acknowledge him as a remarkable president. He’s a man who has always been more focused on his work than self-promotion, a trait inherent in his character.

And now I have one of the most important questions for you – do you know if Taylor Swift or Beyoncé are going to be at the convention?

You know what, I’m so sorry, but I’m too old to have the inside scoop on that one [Laughs].

How significant do you think a Taylor or Beyoncé endorsement would be?

As a woman who has spent years working tirelessly to break down barriers and promote inclusivity, I firmly believe that this upcoming election could be won on the margins. Every vote counts, and I truly hope that influential women in my community will choose to support Kamala Harris. After closely following her career and reading about her values, I am confident that she aligns with our shared beliefs and goals.

Are you brat?

Back in the day, when someone mentioned “brat” to me, I’d scratch my head in bewilderment, let out a chuckle. You see, for us old-timers, it wasn’t exactly a term of endearment. But times have changed, and now I hear it as a sign of rebellious talent or a young actor breaking the mold. Still, every once in a while, I find myself puzzled, wondering how things have evolved so much in the world of cinema.

I’m going to say you are brat.

I’ll take that as a compliment.
