If you’re really enjoying Black Mirror Season 7, don’t miss out on a chilling dystopian drama that has just been added to Netflix for your streaming pleasure!
Every time I tune in, it never fails to provide thought-provoking social insights through the lens of current and future technology – and more often than not, the outlook is far from rosy.
This seems quite akin to a highly praised drama that initially aired on BBC and HBO back in 2019. Now, it’s available for streaming on Netflix in the United Kingdom.
Why Black Mirror fans should watch Years and Years
One terrific TV series that stands out from the past ten years is “Years and Years,” and it’s definitely recommended viewing for enthusiasts of “Black Mirror.
The show was creatively conceived by Russell T. Davies, a prolific writer known for crafting intriguing science fiction narratives, including the reboot of Doctor Who in 2005.
However, the television series “Years and Years” primarily caters to mature audiences, following a 15-year span in the lives of the Lyons family. The narrative commences in the United Kingdom during the year 2019, concluding in 2034.
In this time, there’s widespread unrest due to a prominent businesswoman, portrayed by Emma Thompson, who holds contentious views ascending to authority. This polarizing figure splits the nation, leading to armed conflicts and the establishment of detention centers, which can be compared to concentration camps.
At this point, there’s an incredible leap in technology, and Bethany Bisme-Lyons (played by Lydia West) seems to be the character who embodies the spirit of Black Mirror the most.
In the early stages of my gaming adventure, I found myself adopting digital enhancements from the game world – specifically, applying face filters in reality. This eventually led me to a personal revelation, one I shared with my folks: I identified as a transhuman.

Over a span of six episodes, something significant unfolds as Bethany undergoes multiple surgeries to incorporate cybernetic technology into her physical self. Notably, at the halfway point, she receives a brain implant enabling direct interaction with the internet, and while we won’t give away the ending, Bethany’s experience is quintessentially reminiscent of Black Mirror.
Alternative themes that intersect with Charlie Brooker’s series encompass artificial intelligence replacing human roles, individuals engaging in romantic relationships with robotic partners, and transferring one’s consciousness to a digital platform or cloud storage.
Watching Years and Years is highly recommended for fans of Black Mirror, as it offers a similar thought-provoking style. However, since it’s only available on UK Netflix at the moment, viewers outside the UK may need to employ a VPN service in order to watch the series if they are located in the US or other regions.
