Disney+ Spain Launches its First Original Melodrama ‘Return to Las Sabinas’ at Iberseries & Platino Industria

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for melodramas and a soft spot for telenovelas, I must say that “Return to Las Sabinas” has piqued my interest significantly. Having spent countless hours engrossed in the complex narratives and emotional rollercoasters of these genres, it’s refreshing to see a new take on the traditional format.

Disney+ Spain has revealed their first original daily soap opera series in Europe, titled “Return to Las Sabinas” (“Regreso a Las Sabinas”), which they claim is the premier melodrama series produced by a top-tier streaming platform.

At the start of the Iberseries & Platino Industria conference held in Madrid from October 1st, the announcement was the main topic discussed.

In contrast to typical telenovelas, this one will air daily, but it will consist of just 70 episodes, each lasting 45 minutes, rather than the 100-episode plus span common in the original format from Latin America.

As a movie enthusiast, I’d say: Back in Barcelona, the setting for my tale, I find myself back in my old neighborhood of Las Sabinas, reuniting with my siblings Gracia and Paloma, as we tend to our ailing father. My sister Gracia crosses paths once more with her past flame, Miguel, who, surprisingly, is now betrothed to Ester. Yet, the sparks between them still seem to dance, for Tano, Miguel’s brother, is stubbornly clinging to his affection for Gracia, creating a complex love triangle that unfolds in our shared hometown.

Paloma assumes control of the family estate and encounters conflicts with landowner Paca Utrera, who harbors sinister intentions for the town. Simultaneously, her father, Emilio, endeavors to mend fences with his daughters; however, a concealed truth impedes his attempts at reconciliation.

In collaboration with Diagonal TV, a Barcelona-based production company that’s a part of Banijay Iberia and is known for producing the melodrama series “Amar en tiempos revueltos” from around 20 years ago, Disney+ Spain has decided to produce “Return…”.

The new melodrama was overseen by Jordi Frades, who held the roles of both showrunner and executive producer, with Eulàlia Carillo writing the script.

At the joint press conference with Frades, who is the Vice President of Original Production for Disney+ Spain, Sofía Fábregas shared the backstory.

As a follower, you’re aware that Diagonal is a trailblazer in this particular genre of fiction within Spain. We had the privilege of meeting with them, and they presented us with numerous ideas. The outcome, after a roughly three-year adventure, is what you see now—two and a half years spent attempting to think outside the box, striving to offer viewers something fresh or reimagining television in familiar ways but with innovative models.

She noted: “Indeed, melodrama has a devoted fanbase, particularly in Spain, Latin America, and Turkey, where the genre thrives. Our goal was to remain true to the melodramatic style. Yet, we chose to use authentic interiors and exteriors instead, which is quite different from typical daily series; as a premium television network, this was a daring move. It was tough, but it paid off beautifully, with our top collaborators.

In his own words, Frades expressed that when Disney+ approached him, they weren’t just opening a new door – they were also granting him a fresh opportunity. This opportunity led him back to a genre he hadn’t explored in quite some time: the daily soap opera. It had been three decades since his first and only daily series, “Poble Nou.” Now, he found himself with an exciting chance to re-immerse himself in this complex and sometimes overlooked genre, armed with all the wisdom he’d gathered throughout his career.

For the first time, this series will be filmed exclusively on real locations, both indoors and outdoors, without any sets. It aims for a cinematic feel with only two cameras, each shot carefully lit, and filming over 20 script pages per day per unit… quite an achievement! I have to admit, I was initially apprehensive about whether it would even be feasible… but it was… And it was a challenging yet delightful production experience, one of the best I’ve had in my career,” he concluded.

“Return to Las Sabinas” will start streaming worldwide on Disney+ and Hulu from Oct. 11.
