Disney+ Shocks Fans by Removing Beloved Star Wars Feature After Just 18 Days

Disney+ has taken down a popular Star Wars element from its service approximately three weeks following its debut. The streaming platform is consistently growing its library, with a significant focus on expanding its Star Wars collection. Fans have recently been enjoying offerings like Season 2 of Andor, Tales of the Underworld, and a live-streaming channel dedicated to Star Wars content that operates around the clock.

On Thursday, May 22nd, the “In a Galaxy Far, Far Away” stream was taken down from Disney+. This continuous playlist dedicated to Star Wars content had been introduced on May 4th as part of Disney+’s annual Star Wars celebration, known as May the Fourth.

In the realm of Disney+, I found myself immersed in the captivating “In A Galaxy Far, Far Away” streaming content. This is reminiscent of traditional television channels, always offering live entertainment. Earlier, Star Wars projects graced the “Hits & Heroes” stream, but that channel was phased out before our beloved Star Wars stream made its entrance.

In a distant galaxy, “In A Galaxy Far, Far Away” offered a variety of Star Wars content, not limiting itself to Disney+ Originals. For instance, a 24-hour channel provided fans with the opportunity to watch the classic feature films along with episodes from shows such as The Acolyte, Andor, and Ahsoka. Interestingly, the latter is currently in production for its second season.

For a period of 18 days from May 4 to May 22, the channel was accessible on the platform before being taken down. It isn’t clear what led to its brief tenure, but it seems plausible that financial factors played a role in Disney’s decision.

It’s plausible that Disney was required to distribute royalties to producers, actors, and other team members every time a specific project was streamed. Given that all Star Wars content is accessible on Disney+ with a basic subscription, it might not have been financially viable for Disney to maintain the stream, potentially explaining its removal from the platform.

There’s currently no certainty about whether Star Wars content will be featured on another official streaming channel at some point down the line, but given its widespread popularity, it seems reasonable to expect it will reappear in a playlist at some stage.

As a dedicated cinephile, I find myself reminiscing about the days when the enchanting “In A Galaxy Far, Far Away” was readily available on Disney+. Now, with its removal, there are only five captivating streams left to explore and immerse myself in the magical worlds they offer.

Throwbacks

The “Throwbacks” channel on Disney+ continues to run. It specializes in broadcasting classic Disney shows from the 1990s and 2000s, including titles like Kim Possible, Timon & Pumbaa, and Quack Pack.

Phineas and Ferb

The beloved series, Phineas and Ferb, is set to return triumphantly on June 5, 2025, with the debut of its fifth season on the Disney Channel. This will mark the first time since 2012 that a new season has been released (discover how much time has passed in the new season of Phineas and Ferb here). Delightfully, fans can stream the fresh episodes the day after they air on Disney+.

To mark the comeback of Phineas and Ferb, Disney+ arranged an uninterrupted Phineas and Ferb marathon on their streaming service. This features episodes from the original show along with exclusive specials like the Marvel collaboration and the Star Wars tie-ins.

The Simpsons

Disney Plus introduced a dedicated stream focusing on “The Simpsons.” Given its extensive run, viewers can jump in whenever they want, and it’s unlikely they’ll ever watch the same episode twice.

Like the Phineas and Ferb stream, The Simpsons‘ also includes the specials that have been released.
