Angela Jain is set to take on the role of Content Head for Disney+ across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, starting in September. Previously, she was the Director of Unscripted at ITV Studios in the United Kingdom.
The new position arises following Disney’s latest earnings discussion, during which they underscored the significance of international markets and their focus on producing local content to strengthen their global library as primary strategies for boosting their streaming service. Over the next four years, Disney+ plans to enhance its production of local originals across Europe, thereby enriching and improving the variety and quality of its content offerings.
Jain is set to oversee the strategic plan for original content in Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) on Disney+, handling aspects such as commissioning, production management, business affairs, and acquiring Disney+ originals branded content. She will be accountable to Eric Schrier, who serves as president of Disney Television Studios and Global Original Television Strategy.
Regarding the appointment, Schrier commented: “Angela’s role as head of original content in EMEA is a crucial element in our aggressive strategy to expand Disney+ locally. Her skills and background will bolster our recent achievements and enhance our storytelling, offering customers more regional stories that complement our exceptional films and series from our worldwide studios.
Jain expressed: “Joining Disney presents a powerful attraction. It’s about getting back to commissioning work, teaming up with Eric Schrier and his exceptional crew. The drive to broaden original content is exhilarating, and I eagerly anticipate collaborating with top-tier creative minds to develop shows of remarkable quality and ambition for Disney+.
I owe a great deal of gratitude to ITV for all the fantastic and fruitful years we’ve shared. I’ll deeply miss the extraordinary and passionate production crews, coworkers, and friends who have been my teachers and companions throughout this journey. To each of them, I extend my sincerest thanks from the bottom of my heart.
In the EMEA region, homegrown productions such as “Rivals,” “The Kidnapped Girl,” “bref.2,” “This Is Not Hollywood” and “Invisible” have achieved great success over the past nine months, accompanied by recognition from organizations like the British Academy of Film and Television Arts through nominations and awards. The future looks promising for local content, with upcoming releases such as “The Lost Station Girls,” “Alice and Steve” and “Call My Agent Berlin” set to join the roster.
Jain boasts a wealth of knowledge in the television industry, spanning areas such as channel management, commissioning, and production. Throughout her career at ITV, she has held prominent positions on both the network and studio sides. She served as the controller of digital channels and acquisitions, managing director of Lifted Entertainment, and more recently as the inaugural director of Unscripted U.K., where she supervises the 11 labels that produce some of the world’s top-performing formats. Before this role, Jain was the controller of ITV2, where she greenlit global sensations like “Love Island” and shows such as “Plebs,” “The Big Reunion,” and “Timewasters.” During her tenure at E4, she commissioned landmark series like “The Inbetweeners,” “Misfits,” and “Dead Set,” while also acquiring popular titles like “Glee” and “The Big Bang Theory.” Prior to this, Jain worked in freelance independent production across various genres.
