As a huge fan, it’s always a rollercoaster with Disney! They give us amazing things like the possibility of Zootopia 2, and then… well, they take things away. I was really excited about the live-action Robin Hood project Carlos López Estrada was directing – I’d been following it for years. Sadly, he just revealed in a Reddit AMA that Disney has completely shelved it. He seemed genuinely heartbroken, saying it had something truly special and original about it, and that they’d even developed some incredible music. It’s a real shame, and honestly, a bit of a blow for those of us who were eagerly anticipating it.
Back in 2020, Disney revealed plans for a remake of Robin Hood, similar to how they updated The Lion King – meaning it would rely heavily on computer-generated imagery. Kari Granlund, who penned the 2019 Lady and the Tramp remake, was slated to write the script, and the producer of the live-action Dumbo was also on board. However, after six years with no news about who would star in the film, it became clear the project wasn’t moving forward.
I recently heard from director López Estrada that he hasn’t entirely given up on his take on the Robin Hood story. He mentioned on Reddit he’s still picturing it as an independent film, but with a clever twist – reimagining the iconic character as a completely different animal to avoid any copyright issues. He was even brainstorming a goose! Though, he quickly realized Disney already did a goose version, so that idea might be off the table. It’s a fun peek into the creative process and shows he’s still thinking about how to bring his vision to life.
