Spoilers for the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch follow.
Critics and fans have been expressing their disapproval towards the altered ending in the live-action remake of the beloved animated film, Lilo & Stitch. The responses range from “I find it irritating that they removed Gantu” to “Nani giving up guardianship of Lilo is a concerning indicator of creeping fascism.” However, it appears that the latter sentiment is more prevalent among viewers. Here’s an analysis of the main criticisms against this new ending for Lilo & Stitch.
It seems quite understandable why Disney might have made this change, considering recent debates on elder sibling parentification. One might wonder if Nani deserves a life of her own, with a career and personal pursuits. Isn’t it aspirational for a Disney princess to chase her dreams, as one would expect? However, critics on social media argue that this portrayal of Nani as a modern, independent woman overlooks the historical role of the state in separating indigenous families over the years. Some even claim the movie promotes the narrative of social services, similar to how Marvel movies and military propaganda or police procedurals promote certain institutions.
It’s clear that many people appreciate the CGI version of Stitch, as it has surpassed its original’s box office earnings worldwide. There are supporters of the live-action remake, too. For instance, one Twitter user noted that Lilo is placed under the care of a neighbor instead of a stranger or institutional home, which aligns more closely with the original story. Additionally, the mid-credits sequence shows how Nani uses advanced technology to maintain contact with Lilo while attending school on the mainland. However, the reason for Nani leaving Oahu to study marine biology is a point of contention among critics. A TikTok user expressed frustration that Nani would leave an island to pursue marine biology, deeming it absurd. “Hawaii is an island!” they exclaimed. “Why would you leave an island to study marine biology? That’s preposterous!” The affordability of education in Hawaii for native Hawaiians is a concern, and the omission of Pleakly wearing a dress has raised questions about the adaptation.
