For the first time, Discord is transferring some of its most-loved mobile functionalities onto its desktop application, accompanied by a substantial makeover.
In 2023, the widely-used messaging app underwent a complete overhaul of its mobile version, making it available to all users by December of that year.
Initially, I, along with numerous other fans, swiftly voiced my discontent and even canceled my Discord Nitro membership in response to the drastic overhaul they’d unveiled. However, it seems that the company has remained committed to enhancing their mobile app, a commitment that’s been ongoing for years now.
2024 saw and continued into early 2025 rumors about an overhaul of the desktop design circulating on social platforms. On March 25th, this long-awaited reveal finally happened.
Discord redesign brings new themes
In 2023, Discord introduced a new midnight theme along with the revamping of their mobile app, and now, with the recent update, this theme, which they’ve named ‘Onyx,’ is making its way to desktop versions as well.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that Discord isn’t limiting its aesthetic updates to mobile devices alone. In addition to the already announced themes, they’re also unveiling a fresh Light theme, joining the previously mentioned Ash and Dark – two dark theme variants that more closely align with the app’s original design.
Along with the introduction of fresh themes, Discord has also introduced on its desktop application a feature that was previously exclusive to mobile: UI density options. This allows users to customize the amount of space between messages by choosing among spacious, default, and compact settings. Essentially, this means users can opt to view more or less content at one time, depending on their preference.
Beyond the latest features, Discord’s desktop version now allows you to adjust the size of your channel list, enabling it to occupy as much space as desired. This modification makes it simpler to read longer channel names and also benefits users aiming to maximize their viewable chat window area.

The app now features updated color highlights and images across its interface, designed to enhance readability and align the desktop version’s design more closely with its mobile counterpart.
Recently, Discord revealed plans to introduce advertisements on its mobile app from June 2025. This will allow users to watch videos in exchange for in-app rewards such as game items and customizations for their digital personas.
