Disco Elysium Devs Form New Studio, Currently Working On A "Spiritual Successor" To The Beloved RPG

As a dedicated fan of immersive and thought-provoking RPGs, I am thrilled by the announcement of Longdue Games and their upcoming project, a spiritual successor to Disco Elysium. Having spent countless hours exploring Revachol’s grimy streets and delving into my characters’ psyches, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia tinged with anticipation.

A team of developers originally assigned to create the follow-up to Disco Elysium have revealed the establishment of their own studio called Longdue Games, and they’ve unveiled a new project. According to them, this upcoming game is set in a universe envisioned by the lead creators of the previously scrapped Disco Elysium sequel.

Longdue Games comprises approximately a dozen team members, several of whom previously worked on Disco Elysium or were scheduled to work on its sequel prior to its termination. Conflicts over legal matters between the game’s development and publishing company ZA/UM, and Disco Elysium game director Robert Kurvitz and art director Aleksander Rostov eventually resulted in the sequel’s cancellation. Despite Longdue Games labeling their forthcoming game as a “spiritual successor” to the original, neither Kurvitz, Rostov, nor ZA/UM are associated with this project.

In a press statement, Longdue revealed that their first game has been crafted alongside creative minds from the original Disco Elysium team and contributors to the upcoming sequel. This continues the narrative-focused style that was a hallmark of the previous game. According to Longdue, this game delves into the complex interplay between mind and surroundings, providing players with an immersive storyline where their decisions influence not only the characters but also the world itself.

Similar to Disco Elysium, Longdue’s upcoming, as yet unnamed project is a role-playing game that emphasizes psychological complexity and player decisions. The developers are committed to upholding the legacy of Disco Elysium. It’s no surprise that Longdue decided to announce this new game and the formation of their studio on the fifth anniversary of Disco Elysium’s initial release.

On the occasion of the fifth year since the launch of Disco Elysium, Longdue’s inaugural project pays tribute to the classic CRPG genre while carving out its own reliable and trustworthy identity within the realm of isometric RPG development, as stated in a recent press release by Longdue.

Longdue’s upcoming game is labeled as a role-playing game (RPG) with rich narrative, focusing on psychogeography. This game will delve into the intricate dance between conscious and subconscious thoughts, visible and invisible elements, and present complex situations where decisions made by players will affect not only their character but also the surrounding environment, creating a dynamic landscape influenced by both internal and external factors.

In the game, Longdue explains that the psychogeographic role-playing mechanic causes each choice made to have a significant impact, shaping not just the game world but also the lives of its inhabitants.

In this interactive journey, the boundaries between the player’s mind and the game’s world become indistinct. With every decision made, these elements intertwine, mutate, and reshape, guiding the players through a constantly changing storyline environment.

Currently, not much information is available about the forthcoming role-playing game, since the developer has yet to disclose its name. However, expect regular updates on Longdue Games’ official site once the development process advances further.
