Director of Anti-Putin Drama ‘The Antique’ Sets English-Language Debut, ‘Operation K,’ About Communist Crackdown of Monasteries (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of world cinema, I can confidently say that Rusudan Glurjidze is quickly becoming one of my favorite filmmakers. Her ability to tackle complex political narratives with sensitivity and depth, as evidenced by “The Antique” and “House of Others,” is truly remarkable.

Rusudan Glurjidze, a Georgian filmmaker whose controversial anti-Putin film “The Antique” almost didn’t premiere at the Venice Film Festival, is preparing for her first English-speaking production titled “Operation K.

1949 and 1950 mark the setting for this movie, which tells a real-life account of the communist suppression of Catholic monasteries in Czechoslovakia. This event led to the imprisonment of countless monks en masse.

Titled “Operation K,” which translates to “monastery” in Czech, the movie tells the story of Josef Toufar, a Czech priest who faced torture for challenging his nation’s Soviet-backed regime. Veteran Czech actor Karel Roden, known for roles in films like “Orphan” and “RocknRolla,” is set to portray Toufar in the film.

Titled “Operation K” by Gregory W. Jordan (“The Royal”), this story unfolds against the backdrop of the early Cold War period, a time when Communists were conducting sham trials, forcibly closing churches, and arresting, executing, and imprisoning clergy members, including priests and nuns, in what was then Czechoslovakia.

Besides “The Antique,” which was Georgia’s submission for the Oscars, Glurjidze had also directed “House of Others” earlier, a film that bagged the Grand Prix at Karlovy Vary.

Under “Operation K,” Glurjidze will once again collaborate with acclaimed cameraman Gorka Gomez Andreu, who has previously worked on ‘The Antique’ and ‘House of Others.’

David Goldblum, together with Conscious Contact Entertainment, will collaborate with Jordan’s Sweet Ginger Films for the production of “Operation K”. The shooting of this project is set to start in Europe during the autumn season next year.

Apart from playing a role in “Operation K,” Roden is also set to serve as an executive producer. He has previously acted in films such as Paul Greengrass’ “The Bourne Supremacy,” Guillermo del Toro’s “Hellboy” and “Blade II.
