Carl Rinsch has denied the allegations of fraud and money laundering following accusations that he misused $11 million from Netflix, which were intended for an unfinished sci-fi series. Instead, the director reportedly used the funds to buy luxury vehicles and invest in cryptocurrency.
On Thursday afternoon, Rinsch, who had been released on a $100,000 bond, attended a court hearing at a downtown Manhattan courthouse for his arraignment. The judge, in a room filled with students from Columbia Law School, made light-hearted remarks. In late April, Rinsch is expected to return to a civil court in Los Angeles for an examination by Netflix’s legal team regarding his debts. Netflix has secured a $11.8 million judgment and is trying to trace assets they could potentially seize.
On September 8th, a court date was established, and Rinsch’s current bail conditions were extended. The majority of the case’s evidence has been given to the defense, although the prosecution mentioned they are working on gaining access to several hard drives and laptops that currently violate their security regulations. By May, the judge expects these items of evidence to be made available.
If the court case proceeds to a trial, Rinsch may potentially spend as many as 20 years behind bars. However, the judge expressed that he doesn’t give significant weight to the sentencing guidelines, referring to them as “completely illogical.
Previously, Rinsch was a rising filmmaker who gained prominence for directing futuristic advertisements for brands like Heineken, BMW, and Mercedes. This recognition led to him being appointed as the director for “47 Ronin,” an original samurai movie featuring Keanu Reeves. Despite the film’s failure and reported losses of around $120 million for Universal, Rinsch had influential backers. He held Ridley Scott in high regard as a mentor, and later, Keanu Reeves would become an investor in “White Horse,” a TV series by Rinsch that focuses on humanoid artificial intelligence characters.
The project underwent a nomadic journey through Hollywood, garnering attention from Annapurna and Rian Johnson. Initially, six episodes were filmed, spanning from four to ten minutes, with intentions to produce seven more. However, in 2018, Netflix executives evaluated the script and decided to invest $44 million to finish the series, which was later rechristened as “Conquest,” while also acquiring the initial investors. Upon resuming production in Brazil, Rinsch surpassed budget limits. According to an arbiter’s decision, there were additional issues, such as casting difficulties and accusations of misconduct and mistreatment on set.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but share this intriguing tale. Netflix reportedly granted an extra $11 million to director Rinsch for wrapping up the initial season of “Conquest”. However, according to legal claims, instead of using the funds for the production, he is said to have diverted it into his personal account. The money was allegedly spent on extravagant purchases like a $28,000 sofa and two mattresses costing a whopping $650,300, as well as on cryptocurrency trading and stock market investments.
In 2020, Netflix withdrew a $55 million investment which reportedly led Rinsch to become upset and send aggressive emails to top company officials. During an arbitration hearing, Rinsch explained that his behavior was related to his autism. “What’s happening there,” he stated, “is not due to drug use or mental illness. It’s amplifying a unique neurological condition that many people might find hard to comprehend.
It’s said that Rinsch reportedly splurged excessively, causing his cryptocurrency holdings to plummet from approximately $26.7 million to just $68,000 between May 2021 and May 2023. In the year 2024, he admitted to a judge that he was nearly penniless, prompting Netflix to seek recovery of its $11.8 million court ruling against him.
