Digital Card Game The Elder Scrolls: Legends Will Shut Down Its Servers In January 2025

As a long-time fan of Bethesda Softworks and The Elder Scrolls series, this news about The Elder Scrolls: Legends sunsetting has left me feeling like a Nord who’s just lost his last bottle of honeywine at a Skyrim tavern.

Bethesda Softworks, the developer, is planning to retire their free-to-play (F2P) card game The Elder Scrolls: Legends. This F2P game initially launched on mobile devices, Mac, and PC in May 2017. However, it seems that for now, there will be no new content development or releases.

This announcement, initially shared on Reddit in 2019, saw a period of lesser activity until recently when this new update emerged online. Players still have a few months to savor The Elder Scrolls: Legends before it’s fully phased out; but for those using PC, access might already be restricted.

As reported by Rock, Paper, Shotgun on November 2nd, 2024, players using PC platforms are currently unable to find or play The Elder Scrolls: Legends on Steam. This is due to the game’s absence from Steam’s search results. A link to the game’s listing on the platform confirms its removal, stating clearly, “The Elder Scrolls: Legends is no longer available on the Steam store.” Additionally, according to Rock, Paper, Shotgun, an in-game message also notifies players of the game’s closure, providing a date for the shutdown of its servers.

“The Elder Scrolls: Legends servers will permanently shut down on January 30, 2025. From now until January 30, 2025, all items in the store and entry into in-game events will be available for one Gold each, so you can enjoy all the content Legends has to offer,” the pop-up notice reads.

The message reads, “On the specified date, our servers will be turned off, making the game unplayable. We appreciate your playtime in Legends and hope you’ve had a great experience!

At present, several card games such as Marvel Snap and the newly launched Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket are thriving within this category. It’s quite unfortunate that the timing isn’t ideal for The Elder Scrolls: Legends to exit the market, considering its growing popularity in more recent years.
