Didi O’Hearn, Longtime A+E Networks Executive, Dies at 63

As a devoted cinema enthusiast with a penchant for unraveling the intricate tapestry of behind-the-scenes stories, I find myself deeply moved by the passing of Deirdre “Didi” O’Hearn. This remarkable woman, who left an indelible mark on the world of television, has departed from us far too soon at the tender age of 63.

Didi O’Hearn, a former executive at A&E Television Networks, passed away on August 12, 2022, due to lung cancer while under hospice care in St. Augustine, Florida. She was 63 years old.

For approximately four years, starting in 2014, O’Hearn held the position of Senior Vice President of Programming and Development at the Food Network and Cooking Channel. During her tenure, she managed existing content as well as the development and creation of new television shows for these channels. Prior to this role, she had experience in cable executive positions and worked with WeTV and other networks.

In the course of my professional journey, I was fortunate enough to be put forward for six Emmy awards. During this time, I also held the position of Vice President for Nonfiction and Alternative Programming at A&E Television Networks. In this role, I spearheaded the creation of “Gene Simmons Family Jewels,” a reality show that chronicled the life of Gene Simmons, his spouse Shannon Tweed, and their children.

For sixteen years, O’Hearn was employed by a particular network, during which time she held positions such as executive producer and supervising producer on the show “Biography.” In this role, she created episodes delving into the lives of various individuals, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Mike Tyson, Sylvester Stallone, Val Kilmer, among others. Additionally, while at the network, she served as the head of programming for the Biography Channel and also produced content for both the A&E Network and History Channel.

In her role as Vice President for Development and Talent at WeTV, she was responsible for creating unique series and specials. While with the company, she played a significant part in developing popular shows such as “Mary Mary,” “Kendra on Top,” and “L.A. Hair.” Prior to joining WeTV, O’Hearn held the position of Vice President at non-fiction media production company Darlow Smithson Productions.

I’m grateful to have been part of the loving family circle that includes my cherished wife, Richard; our sons, Ian and Michael; and my brothers, William, Robert, Michael, and Tierney. In keeping with my spirit, if you feel moved, consider making a donation to the NYU Langone Health Perlmutter Cancer Center.
