Did Quentin Tarantino Warrant George Clooney’s Cattiness?

As a seasoned cinephile with a soft spot for Hollywood lore and its quirky denizens, I can’t help but chuckle at the latest spat between Quentin Tarantino and George Clooney. Having followed their careers since the ’90s, I’ve seen them both rise to fame and leave indelible marks on cinema.

As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but acknowledge the instances that might provoke anger towards Quentin Tarantino. His knack for being irritating is such that even Fiona Apple, known for her resilience, has been driven away from cocaine by him. Yet, it seems George Clooney’s ire stems from a recent statement made by Tarantino. In an interview with GQ on August 13, Clooney expressed, “Quentin said some things about me that have left me slightly agitated.” It appears that during an interview, Tarantino was naming other movie stars and was asked about Clooney. Instead of acknowledging him, he seemingly stated, “Name a movie since the millennium” – a comment that didn’t sit well with Clooney. As he put it, “Since the millennium? That’s essentially my entire career.” Interestingly enough, there seems to be some misinterpretation here, as Tarantino may not have actually said those exact words.

Quentin Tarantino has expressed his thoughts on movie stardom previously, causing a bit of controversy with Simu Liu when he stated during an interview on the podcast 2 Bears 1 Cave, hosted by Tom Segura in 2022, that Marvel doesn’t produce movie stars. However, even within this discussion, Tarantino emphasized that if an actor delivers a stellar performance in a film as successful as those produced by Marvel back in 2005, they would undoubtedly be considered a star because it indicates the audience appreciates and enjoys their work. A notable example he gave was George Clooney’s role in Syriana, which earned him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor that year and by then, he had already appeared in several Ocean’s movies.

Quentin Tarantino and George Clooney have collaborated once previously, on the film “From Dusk Till Dawn,” where Tarantino co-starred as Clooney’s brother and wrote the script, but he didn’t direct. Interestingly, in a subsequent interview, Clooney humorously criticized Tarantino for claiming during an MTV interview that he cast Clooney because they resembled brothers, which left Clooney puzzled and responding with disbelief. Since “From Dusk Till Dawn,” Tarantino hasn’t publicly mentioned Clooney in interviews, although Vulture has attempted to get his thoughts on the matter. One might wonder if their conversation took place privately instead.
