The blockbuster Minecraft Movie continues to rule cinemas and box offices for more than a month now, yet the latest “meme-synced” showings have gone largely unnoticed, leaving fans questioning if they were just figments of their imagination.
Let’s go back. After Minecraft started rapidly approaching the $1 billion box office milestone, moviegoers got excited in theaters. The notorious Chicken Jockey scene became popular on TikTok, which led to fans disrupting screenings with popcorn, cheering, and even one instance of bringing a live chicken.
To foster harmony among eager fans desiring involvement and those preferring a quiet movie experience, cinemas devised a solution. Dubbed “Meme-along” screenings, these events aimed to amplify the excitement of the hype without succumbing to its less favorable aspects. The first such screening was scheduled for May 2, 2025.
After that date has passed, the alleged chaos seems to have largely dissipated. In truth, the Minecraft Movie screenings were so tranquil that it leaves some fans doubting whether they truly occurred at all.
Minecraft movie’s “meme-along” screenings get radio silence from fans
It’s clear from the poster that the “Block Party Edition” screenings were indeed real events. They were accessible in both the UK and US, allowing viewers to check showtimes and buy tickets just like they would for any other movie. However, if we believe social media reports, attendance seems to have been relatively low, which has led to some worry among fans.
One fan questioned, “It seems no one’s discussing this. Could it be that it actually occurred?” A second fan responded, “I was the sole attendee at the movie theater,” with a third chiming in, “The lack of chatter is quite amusing.
It seems that only a few individuals attended these events, as I’ve only come across about three videos and only one of them displayed more than five people, according to a fourth person’s report.
Based on fan reactions, there are several explanations for the reduced publicity this time. One reason that stands out is that many people have already experienced it, so they seized the opportunity to celebrate enthusiastically when they could. Isn’t it less exciting when you’re given permission to do something that feels a bit naughty?
Well, since practically everyone has seen the Minecraft film in the cinema once already, re-watching it isn’t usually something you do at the theater. Instead, I adore the Minecraft movie, but you’d typically catch a second viewing when it gets released on streaming services.
It seems there’s a problem with the timing of screenings. A lot of screenings scheduled for memes were set during early mornings, resulting in most of them being sparsely attended at best, often with only a few people showing up.
Someone pointed out that a joke loses its humor when the target of the joke starts laughing along with it.
At present, it’s undecided whether movie-theater showings of meme-inspired screenings will persist. However, a Minecraft film is scheduled to debut on streaming platforms on May 13, 2025.
