heads up: The following content reveals spoilers from the third episode of The Last of Us season 2 as well as The Last of Us Part II.
In the third episode of season 2 from “The Last of Us”, when Ellie talks to Gail, it appears she implies that her last encounter with Joel was during New Year’s Eve, but this might be a falsehood. In the opening episode, after Dina kissed Ellie and Seth hurled a homophobic remark, Joel intervened by pushing him. However, instead of expressing gratitude as he expected, Ellie becomes upset with Joel. This is because she has grown tired of being in his shadow and wants to establish her own independence, which makes her resentful towards his help.
In a subsequent scene that night, as Ellie encounters Joel on his porch, she chooses not to engage and instead heads towards her garage. The next day, while conversing with Jesse, she implies that her issues with Joel have been resolved and they’re in a better place. However, during episode 3 of “The Last of Us” season 2 titled “The Path,” Ellie tells Gail at the hospital that her most recent interaction with Joel was the unpleasantness at the party. Therefore, one might wonder if Ellie was truthful to Gail about their last conversation.
Ellie Implies That Her Last Interaction With Joel Happened At The New Year’s Eve Dance In The Last Of Us
Did They Really End Things On Such A Sour Note?
In the latest installment of “The Path,” we find ourselves three months removed from the devastating events of the previous episode. Jackson is steadily recovering, while Joel’s family is still grappling with their grief. Ellie, having healed from her injuries, is on the verge of being discharged from the hospital, but before she goes, she needs to have a chat with Gail. During this discussion, Ellie reminisces about her last conversation with Joel, which took place during the New Year’s Eve dance when she had an argument with him.
In a later scene that night, she seemed to be in his presence on the porch, implying a possible reenactment of Joel and Ellie’s famous porch scene from the game. However, this setup appeared as though they hadn’t spoken, leaving us to wonder if the TV show is omitting this cherished moment or if Ellie is deceiving Gail about her conversation with Joel following their dance. Ellie had earlier told Jesse that she resolved things with Joel after the dance, but it seems she might have done so just to change the subject.
Ellie’s History Of Lying Means The Porch Flashback With Joel Can Still Happen
It Could Appear At The Very End Of The Story, Like In The Game
Towards the end of the show’s episode, Gail shares with Tommy that Ellie might not be truthful. She found Ellie’s speech to the town council questionable and suspects that her thirst for revenge is self-serving rather than for the greater good. Given Ellie’s history of dishonesty, it’s plausible that the heartfelt conversation with Joel, as depicted in the game, might not have been genuine at first glance. In the game, this flashback only surfaces at the end of the story, and it significantly alters our understanding of events. The TV adaptation of “The Last of Us” may be holding back this revelation for a similar purpose.
