Caution: Spoilers for the second episode of Doctor Who season 15, titled “Lux,” reveal that Lux Imperator, played by Alan Cumming, makes his entrance and possibly departure. The ending leaves viewers wondering if we’ll see him again in future episodes. Initially appearing as a 2D character named Mr. Ring-a-Ding, he transforms into the embodiment of the God of Light, adding to the pantheon of Doctor Who characters. This menacing villain has the power to control the Doctor at a fundamental level, but in the end, the Doctor manages to defeat him.
Lux” differs significantly from any “Doctor Who” episode I’ve encountered before. It abounds with meta instances and breaches of the fourth wall, even more so than usual for “Doctor Who” during its Disney era. Furthermore, Cumming’s character is a captivating antagonist who carries intricate backstory and leaves the series in a somewhat enigmatic state. His appearance as a 2D animated avatar might appear as a large novelty, but it effectively fits within the realm of “Doctor Who”.
Lux Isn’t Exactly Dead, But He’s No Longer A Threat
The God of Light becomes one with the universe
In the final scene of the episode, The Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) grant Lux’s desire by subjecting Cumming’s character to sunlight from Earth. Unfortunately for Lux, this occurs before he has a physical form that can tolerate solar radiation. Consequently, Lux keeps expanding without limit, eventually merging with the universe.

As a movie buff, I’d rephrase it this way: Overwhelming light flooded Lux, sparking a series of events that transformed him back into an ethereal being. His joy and exhilaration were palpable with this newfound realization. So, contrary to initial assumptions, the Doctor didn’t eliminate Lux, but instead facilitated his transition from a realm where violence and devastation no longer existed – allowing him to ascend to a higher plane of existence. In other words, we won’t have to worry about any more disturbances from Lux in the future.
It’s Unlikely Than Any Pantheon God Can Die Completely
Gods aren’t defeated quite so easily
Characters like the Toymaker and Sutekh from the classic Doctor Who series, such as Neil Patrick Harris and Gabriel Woolf respectively, demonstrate that it’s extremely challenging to completely vanquish beings of great power, known as the Pantheon. Although they can be restrained or delayed, it’s doubtful that even the Doctor could find a way to guarantee they would never cause trouble again. This includes Lux, who has been dealt with as effectively as any character from Doctor Who’s roster of powerful beings can be managed.
