The news that a movie based on Minecraft, one of the world’s most popular video games, has hit the big screen has been shared – or more accurately, it’s now playing at a theater near you. Directed by Jared Hess, who brought us Napoleon Dynamite, this film follows an intriguing cast of characters:
Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), a former gaming champion struggling to save his store from being shut down, encounters Henry (Sebastian Hansen), a resourceful orphan who loves creating things, and his sister Natalie (Emma Myers). This trio is joined by Dawn (Danielle Brooks), a real estate agent with dreams of operating a petting zoo. As fate would have it, they all end up being transported to the Minecraft universe, where they meet Steve (Jack Black). Notably, Jennifer Coolidge is also part of this ensemble.
The storyline might seem overwhelming at first, but critics have found themselves divided into two groups: those who are eagerly hopping on this humorous journey (spectators) and those who are more focused on the real world (survivalists). If you’re up for some Minecraft-inspired fun, don’t miss out!

The unique appeal of “A Minecraft Movie” comes from how it blends Black’s eccentric energy with that of his fellow actors, particularly Jason Momoa who portrays a former gamer and ’80s relic still banking on his past arcade victories. Remarkably, this movie manages to be hilarious, energetic, and agile in its delivery. – Translated from Bilge Ebiri’s review on Vulture
The Minecraft Movie, as described by Owen Gleiberman in Variety, is an adventurous, light-hearted, low-key comedy with a lack of high jinks. It transports a group of actors into the Overworld, the heart of the Minecraft universe, via a portal resembling oozing blue goo. The movie has a distinct 1980s feel, and despite Minecraft not being created until 2011, the entire film carries a nostalgic, cheesy flavor.
A Minecraft Movie’s goofiness is perfect for kids who adore the game and adults reminiscing about their comedy phase. However, it could have taken a more refined and formulaic approach like Jumanji, another of Black’s game-themed movies. Yet, in an era dominated by assembly-line adaptations, this film stands out, even with its simplistic charm.” – Brandon Yu, The New York Times
In the cinematic adaptation of the widely acclaimed video game, “A Minecraft Film,” director Jared Hess’ unique style stands out significantly. Despite being a big-studio production, it incorporates plenty of humor that will make you laugh out loud. The storyline of this Overworld journey is initially filled with Hess’ silly antics, but eventually transitions into the usual CG-driven fantasy adventure.
The film carries a familiar message: “the world is what you make of it.” However, it is Jack Black and Jason Momoa who deliver this message with infectious comic energy.
Critics on Survival mode
The proposed “Minecraft Movie” suggests that this cash-grab rehashing of a beloved sandbox video game is part of a larger trend of movie adaptations. It’s possible that an alternative exists, one that is more clever, witty, and genuinely funny – a genuine Minecraft film. One with actual humor. Or, heaven forbid, there may even be a less successful version, though that seems unlikely. What’s clear is that the freedom offered to players in the game – the ability to shape their own experience – poses a significant challenge for any Minecraft movie adaptation.
Lovia Gyarkye of The Hollywood Reporter found one major letdown in the Minecraft movie directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre). It’s not that it originated from an existing intellectual property. In today’s world, we see many low-inspiration reboots, unwarranted remakes, and films created to boost corporate brands. Such projects are unfortunately common. What makes the Minecraft movie so disheartening is its inability to ignite the imagination, which contradicts a fundamental aspect of the game it’s modeled after.
