Dick Van Dyke Endorsed Kamala Harris Using the Same Speech He Gave 60 Years Ago at 1964 MLK Jr. Rally

As a film enthusiast with a profound appreciation for the golden age of television and cinema, I find myself deeply moved by Dick Van Dyke‘s latest endorsement. At 98 years old, the legendary actor, who graced our screens with iconic roles in “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “Mary Poppins,” and “Bye Bye Birdie,” among others, still carries a powerful voice that resonates with the essence of humanity.

Legendary television figure Dick Van Dyke publicly supported Kamala Harris’s presidential bid, reciting a speech he had originally delivered during a 1964 civil rights event in the presence of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In a video named “VOTE!! @KamalaHarris,” posted on Monday, the 98-year-old actor famous for “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “Mary Poppins,” and “Bye Bye Birdie” reminisced about reciting speeches penned by the creator of “The Twilight Zone” to an audience of approximately 60,000 people in the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Van Dyke stated that it’s not usual to feel hatred or prejudice. Suspicion, dislike, jealousy, and scapegoating are not typical human traits. Instead, he described them as illnesses or ailments, even comparing them to cancer of the soul.

He continued, “There may be instances of violence and displays of hatred, along with an unpleasant reminder of intolerance, but these are relics clinging to a dying past, not heralds of the brighter, purer future. To those who argue that inequality among humans is an unfortunate necessity, we should reply by stating that it is indeed evil and not essential.

Following his closing statements, Van Dyke remarked, “A great deal has transpired since 1964. It may not be as much as Martin Luther King Jr. envisioned, but it’s a beginning. Thank you, and may God bless.

In the 2020 presidential primary, Van Dyke stood by Bernie Sanders, even appearing at one of his campaign rallies. Previously, he had expressed his endorsement for Joe Biden, before the latter withdrew from the contest.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter back in June, Van Dyke expressed his belief that Donald Trump appears “disturbed,” as he has never witnessed the former president genuinely laughing.
