Dick Van Dyke Didn’t Win an Emmy This Weekend — and Didn’t Break Any Records, Despite Reports

As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the recent Emmy Awards fiasco surrounding Dick Van Dyke has left me more bewildered than a Mary Poppins spell gone awry. While it’s heartwarming to see Dick Van Dyke’s name associated with an Emmy yet again, the confusion over who actually won is as perplexing as a Charlie Chaplin silent film with sound effects.

Dick Van Dyke is an undisputed legend who has graced both large and small screens, but regrettably, contrary to recent speculations, he will not receive a Primetime Emmy Award in 2024.

At this weekend’s Creative Arts awards, Dick Van Dyke himself didn’t receive an Emmy, which signifies that he didn’t set a new record as the oldest Primetime Emmy winner in history. However, there seems to be some misunderstanding since a special about him titled “CBS’ ‘Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic'” did indeed win an Emmy. Moreover, images from the ceremony depicted Van Dyke with a statuette, but that particular award wasn’t his.

At the recent Creative Arts Emmys over the weekend, “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic” won the award for exceptional pre-recorded variety special. However, it’s important to note that Van Dyke himself wasn’t credited as a producer on the project, which means he couldn’t be officially recognized as a nominee or winner in this category.

In other words, it appears that the claim that Dick Van Dyke broke Norman Lear’s record as the oldest Emmy Award winner ever at 98 years old is incorrect. The record still belongs to Lear, who was 98 (although slightly younger than Van Dyke is now) when he won the Emmy for outstanding variety special (live) for “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” in 2020.

In the “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic” production, the following individuals were awarded for their work: Executive producers Craig Plestis, Chris Wagner, Clara Plestis, Ashley Edens, Deena Katz, and Arlene Van Dyke; in addition to supervising producer Stephanie Wagner. Furthermore, Brittany Cherry and Ariel Kubit served as producers, while Chelsea Gonnering handled line production.

Indeed, it implies that Van Dyke’s spouse, Arlene, did receive an Emmy for her role as an executive producer. Therefore, while the superstar may not have won one, a statuette will still find its way to their home.

Over the course of his career, Dick Van Dyke has amassed four Prime-time Emmy Awards. His most recent win came in 1977, for the category of Outstanding Comedy-Variety or Music Series, specifically for NBC’s “Van Dyke and Company.” Earlier on, he received three Emmys for his acting performances in “The Dick Van Dyke Show” in 1964, 1965, and 1966. Furthermore, in 1995, he was honored by being inducted into the Television Academy’s Hall of Fame.

Earlier this year, the star shattered a record, but at the 2024 Daytime Emmy Awards, he triumphed in the exceptional guest performer in a drama series category (for “Days of Our Lives”). This achievement made him the oldest winner to date in that particular competition.
